Imagine showing a petrol engine to someone who had only known electric vehicles, and trying to convince them to switch to petrol. No-one would choose the dirty, noisy, less efficient, more expensive vehicle. This isn't 1910, hostage to gender insecurity. We can just choose the better tech.

#SoullessPrince operates under the premise that it's been translated. "Durrish" is the predominant language in Durshand, to Reed, it sounds like German, Icelandic, and Russian had a freak baby. There's also the Hans, who speak Hannish. Reed describes it as a Farsi and Spanish blend

Turns out there's more than one way to get kaana crystals to work! Also yeah, Kena has a bit of a potty mouth 😂❤️

From Book 1 of my #Atlantis trilogy.
Time seemed to have slowed down. Mireia tried to reach for her crystal, thinking she might deconstruct the collapsing wall. But she was still barely hanging on to consciousness, and with Kena jostling her she couldn’t manage to get her fingers around the crystal. He tripped, and they both crashed to the ground again. The building was reaching its tipping point. She saw him fumbling with his own crystal. She saw his arm shoot up, the crystal clutched in his trembling fist. It’s not going to work. “STOP, YOU…!” He bellowed a string of obscenities that would have made Calu’u faint with shock. The kaana crystal in his hand flared with a faint pale glow. In the instant just before the wall smashed them into a bloody mess, the stones rippled like water and abruptly burst into an avalanche of dust and harmless debris.

I recently saw someone refer to “kill your darlings” as meaning to literally kill your characters in the narrative.

It means you have to be willing to let go of your favorite most precious Idea, because sometimes our First Ideas aren’t what’s best for our overall story.

“I still want the duchy. I’ve worked too hard to learn how to take care of it.” Getting time alone with Dad was usually easy, but today, no one wanted to leave me alone. I was exhausted, but I wasn't going to give up on speaking to Dad before the day was over. It had been hours of Lily or Mother fussing over me in the parlor. Then Rose had come to spend time with me. I'd not seen Felix all day. I didn't like that. He'd been traumatized by what happened and everyone was just leaving him alone? I couldn't help but worry. He'd not eaten anything at breakfast. I hadn't had his company at lunch. It was getting toward dinner now, and finally Mother had taken my sisters with vagaries that I hoped were indications that she was making Felix welcome in the house. My father sat across from me in his favorite armchair. He lit his pipe and took a deep drag to steady himself. He nodded. "You know I'll support you. If men are what you're attracted to, then that's just how it is." "Dad," I said, rubbing my palms on my knees. He lifted a brow. "Felix isn't just someone I'm in love with. He's the one. I don't want anyone else. I want to marry him." Father froze, lowering his pipe from his mouth slightly. "You're sure?" I nodded. Pushing my hands through my hair, I started bouncing my knee. I didn't know how to say it other than just be blunt. Maybe I'd not known Felix for long, but I knew my heart. I'd done my duty on the battlefield, but Felix was the only person I'd ever been willing to die for like that. In that split second when I knew the building was coming down on our heads, my only thought had been that I needed to keep Felix safe. It was sobering to know that I wouldn't have made that decision if it had been anyone else. I didn't like that about myself, but the certainty was crystal clear in my mind and heart. Felix was someone I would never get over losing if something happened to him.

“I know she wasn’t well,” Mem went on, stumbling to get the words out. “I know it’s not fair for me to feel like that. But I feel it all the same. It was like she ripped out all of our hearts because she just couldn’t wait to get to her eternal bliss. Like we weren’t—we weren’t good enough to keep her here.” Tears stung her eyes at that last sentence, and she hastily turned her head and brushed them away, embarrassed to lose control like this in front of Light. But it was such a relief to finally say what she’d been feeling for ten years, without having to worry about her father or Clara, well meaning though they might be, ordering her not to feel it. “My father’s death was... not his choice,” Light said carefully, “so I can’t feel angry at him, though I’m angry it happened. But I can completely understand why you’d feel that way.” “I know I shouldn’t,” she released a trembling sigh. “I feel terrible that I do. But I can’t help it.” “You shouldn’t feel terrible. I think it makes sense for you to feel like that.” He paused, as if unsure he should continue his thoughts. “Sometimes I question why El made us this way, marking the people who are destined for paradise. I think knowing what happens after we die can make some people far too focused on the future, and not enough on the present. It leads so often to grief and cruelty. I think we’ve all been hurt by it, one way or another.” Mem gaped at him. It was a blasphemy, to question El’s perfect design. She wanted to be offended by the statement, but... “Before she—killed herself,” she whispered, “my mother told me something. I’ve never known whether I believe it or not.” “What?”

Wiping his hands on his ruined shirt, Reed stepped out of the alley to be immediately spotted by one of the boys he'd given apples to earlier. The young man gasped at seeing him and hurried over. “Amro—” he choked when he caught the stench right in the throat. Reed moved past, careful not to touch the young man as he headed for Abuela Fatima’s building. She’d give him a bath, fresh clothes, and dinner even if he tried to refuse. At the door to her building, Reed took his boots off, then frowned at the door handle he felt too filthy to touch. Thankfully, the young man opened the door and pushed it aside for Reed. “Thanks,” Reed said, entered the foyer, and left his boots outside. This apartment building was the first Reed had bought. He didn’t know what it used to be, but the original design had a foyer that opened into a courtyard. The women who lived in the building used that courtyard as a multipurpose playground for the kids and a place to hang their building’s laundry. Whenever there was a party, this was where they gathered. Six women were taking down their laundry in the fading daylight, but his entrance caught their attention. The eldest, a thin woman with salted dark hair, shouted in shock, “Aiee, Amro Reed! What have you gotten into? Carlo said you were followed by assassins!” Abuela spoke exclusively in Hannish. “They just wanted a chat,” he said in Durrish. While he understood Hannish fluently, he couldn't speak it. The best he could do was mix house Spanish and the bits of Farsi he’d picked up in Afghanistan. Though, the last time he’d tried that, he'd gotten stabbed. Abuela stormed across the courtyard toward him. “By Ifri! Get out of those clothes! Come!” Abuela gestured for him to follow. She stopped and pointed at him. “I said take off the clothes!”

Working on this story lately. Here's Felix and Felicity plotting evil upon their idiot father with one of Felicity's boyfriends.
“My. Goodness,” Cecil said as he slipped onto the terrace. “I leave you alone for a moment, and you’re embracing the son of your sworn enemy.” He sipped one of the two glasses of champagne he held. “I suppose seducing Sir Lyon is part of your plot?” Felix snorted. “Hardly.” He looked down at me. “She’s not my type.” “We were plotting how to embarrass Duke Lyon further,” I said. “Do tell?” Cecil asked as he offered me the other glass. “Felix has been kicked out of every bar in the capital. How could he possibly act in a way that would embarrass the duke?” I took the glass and sized Cecil up. Would his contacts be of any help? Felix answered instead, “I’ve decided to join the Order of Lorelai.” The glass shattered on the ground. Cecil looked down at it, then at his hand as if he couldn’t believe it had betrayed him like that. “I think I misheard.” “You didn’t,” Felix said cheerfully. “Seeing Lady Mortuary make a fool of him made me realize I’ve been doing it all wrong. I’ve been acting within the confines of what he expects. Knights are rowdy. I bet he thought I’d settle down eventually and do what he wants like a good little pawn. I should instead just do what I want. I don’t want to be a knight. I hate swords. I’d rather get sent to a remote village to farm food for the poor. At least then, I’d feel like my early mornings are bettering society rather than just a torture to be endured for a man too stupid to recognize what’s right in front of him.” Cecil covered his eyes with his hand and wheezed a laugh. “Oh. Gods. This is delightful! I’ll help! And the Order of Lorelai isn’t so strict as to keep you from enjoying a drink from time to time.” “I only drink to forget how miserable I am,” Felix admitted. “If I’m not miserable, I do not need to drink.” “Ha, fair point!” Cecil said. “Then here’s to a new life, bereft of misery.” He gestured with his empty hand. I lifted my glass as well.
