Let's keep everyone company this year. I'll be around on christmas day with #joinin whether you need fun or a bit of support or a rant.
No-one should feel alone on christmas day.

I've been missing proper, loose-skinned satsumas for the brief weeks of Advent. TIL. Thread, up and down.

2. New customs rules due to the UK now being outside of the EU single market.
The extra time, effort, paperwork, and risk of importing such perishable low value fruit means that almost all satsumas get sent to the easily accessible markets inside the EU.

A thread to read up and down.
Why decline all these chances to defend feminism? Because to participate would be accepting the premise that our rights and humanity are up for debate in the first place.

Once you’ve conceded that it’s reasonable to ask whether women’s equality was a mistake, you’ve already lost.

The BMA has come out swinging for the rights of all trans people in healthcare settings and beyond - both patients and healthcare providers.

Genuinely brilliant news amongst the bad - please read it and share, and remember that we are NOT alone. Not by a long stretch.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, don’t skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning California’s Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

Morning, all! I have started the week by stabbing myself in the finger while trying to cut my toenails. How's your Monday going?

Yesterday:
Me: *makes pickling liquid for radishes for dinner with friends*
Me: *is distracted*
Pickling liquid: *is syrup*
Me: *sighs, makes second lot of pickling liquid*
S: *washes up*
Me: Where is the pan with the pickling liquid?
Words: *are exchanged*
Me: *makes third batch of pickling liquid*

Can’t find a way to write this that doesn’t sound like a twee bromide but genuinely, if your end of year review is that you survived painful things happening in your life & the world, stayed empathetic in an inhospitable environment & treated yourself & others decently then that’s achievement enough

Go flaccidly amid the noise & haste.
Go ahead, flop: get completely flat, absolutely mollusc boneless, slither & ripple along like a sidewinder, devolve into a blissfully frictionless goo, reject your spine & slip through the day in silky indolence like the mellow unhurried globules in a lava lamp

Today is Human Rights Day. Protecting human rights is essential, especially in these days of relentless and brutal attacks against so many groups of people.

Saying "no" isn't enough, but it is a start. I wrote about why, and provide a few suggestions as to what and how.

Went to the PO late this morning to post parcels and buy pretty seasonal stamps. In an astonishing turn of events:
1) There was no queue.
2) The weather did not blatter down on me.

I'm now worried I've used up my Christmas luck in one go.

Persephone. I rhymed it with 'telephone'.

My gran was actually kind about this and told me that as she had a friend called Penelope, she was very confident that she knew how to pronounce 'antelope' when encountering it for the first time whilst reading aloud in class.
Thank you to the lovely audience member at @hayfestival who shared that her daughter had once corrected her pronunciation of ‘epiphany’ and told her it should of course be ‘epi-fanny’.

Which word have you royally mispronounced because you’d only ever seen it written down?

It was a close shave on Wednesday night at Botanics Lights but that was a cover. Alas, though, I have only lasted a week of #Whamageddon, due to 80s music at the cafe this morning.

(At least it was followed up by Madonna's Like a Prayer which is a banger.)

See you all in #Whamhalla!

"About the Word the unstilled world still whirled." - and a bunch more from the same.

"The planet goes on being round." - because mansplainers.

"On the outskirts of nowhere
On the ring road to somewhere
On the verge of indecision
I'll always take the roundabout way." - lyrics can be poetry too.
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

Recently at a Q&A, the chair asked me an excellent question: Why do you push so hard against the idea of a ‘nature cure’ when moments in your book Drystone - A Life Rebuilt might look like exactly that?

The answer is simple.
