DOWNHEARTED Six horses died in a tractor-trailer fire. There. That's the hard part. I wanted to tell you straight away so we could grieve together. So many sad things, that's just one on a long recent list that loops and elongates in the chest, in the diaphragm, in the alveoli. What is it they say, heart-sick or downhearted? I picture a heart lying down on the floor of the torso, pulling up the blankets over its head, thinking the pain will go on forever (even though it won't). The heart is watching Lifetime movies and wishing, and missing all the good parts of her that she has forgotten. The heart is so tired of beating herself up, she wants to stop it still, but also she wants the blood to return, wants to bring in the thrill and wind of the ride, the fast pull of life driving underneath her. Writing snippet: The lines in her mother's brow had hit a critical tipping point before supper was even on the table, so she'd left as quickly and quietly as she could. She’d learned to make herself small, shoulders in, slithering like liquid from the room, bare feet scarcely disturbing the dust. She went to sit on their front porch and listened for a while to the distant rumble of approaching thunder. Ignored the sobs emanating from inside. The breeze was dirty, chemical, carrying the chorus of a few crickets, but their chirps were slow and lazy. The last call of a dying breed.

Context: Ess is a con artist with forbidden magic. She's also a prisoner, forced to play a role by Galen. Last night, her escape attempt ended in disaster, but she had an unexpected moment with Cal, the man who sees through her act.
But where Galen responded with a gracious smile, Caladon didn’t meet her eye. He glared at the table, either still furious with Galen or furious the presence of so many witnesses required him to be civil to Ess. “Praetessa,” his deep voice strained at the edges, “we won’t take up much of your time. Unfortunately, protecting the forum’s integrity requires certain… excesses. I trust you understand the necessity.” Ess inclined her head. “Of course.” “The process—” His eyes lifted to her face. Her blotchy, sob-stained faced. His eyes narrowed. “Are you well? You look…” He trailed off, clearly unable to find a polite way to say god-awful. Curse him for noticing. Ess turned a grimace into her best I’ve-not-been-sobbing-all-night smile. “Quite alright, thank you. I stayed up far too late.” He stared deep into her eyes, pausing a beat too long, then: “Famously good nightlife in the gardens.” Was that… was that a joke? Ess stared, searching his stern face for the man she’d spied on from behind the pillar last night, the one who would think nothing of soothing her discomfort with a joke. Easy with his comrades, generous with his smiles. A man she’d risked everything to understand. But he gave nothing away. “Scintillating,” she said when the silence stretched thin, “and rather more difficult to escape than I realised.”
