And, look, if the complaint is that emergency vehicles can't get through now that Court St has been reduced to one motor vehicle lane, then in order to be consistent you need to argue for removing parking on every side street in the city, most of which are one lane. Those are the rules!

This is such an obvious, well-known, long-running issue and no one with the power to do anything about it cares nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/09/05/z...

Recorded a 50 minute timelapse of the new Flatbush Ave center running bus lanes this first rush hour, as DOT crews are still installing signage and stuff.

So far, it works! Drivers generally obey it and buses are clearly sped up. And don’t miss that ambulance bypassing traffic at the 6 second mark!

Mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani says he still backs universal intersection daylighting – banning parking near corners for better visibility – even as DOT digs in its heels and plans to sway the next mayor against the street safety policy. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/10/06/l...
Likely Mayor Mamdani Supports Daylighting as DOT Digs In Heels - Streetsblog New York City
The next mayor will have to overcome a deeply entrenched bureaucracy opposed to the common-sense policy.

On Sunday, #Zürich residents voted 52.8% in favor of increasing parking fees for cars according to weight.

The owner of a BMW X2 (Diesel), which weighs 1,675 kilograms, will now pay equivalent of €717 Euros per year to park on a public street. (Before, about €321.)

NEW: A buyout program is coming for homeowners in The Hole, a NYC neighborhood unlike any other.

It’s the first time the city pursues this climate adaptation strategy proactively, instead of after a disaster, and with a focus on inland (not coastal) flooding.

They Live Below Sea Level in NYC. Now, the City Could Buy Out 'The Hole'
The low-lying neighborhood on the Brooklyn-Queens border will be the first place in New York where officials may buy properties proactively — instead of in response to a disaster.

Researchers found expanding the average car length from 16.4 ft to 18 ft decreases street parking by 9.3%, while an additional expansion to 19.7 ft causes a further loss of 7%. (An F-150 truck and Cadillac Escalade SUV are 17.4 ft and 19 ft long, respectively.) www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
Meet the Montreal Mayor Who Declared War on SUVs
Oversized vehicles are devouring street parking spaces in the Canadian city. So one borough’s mayor is fighting back with bigger fees for hefty trucks and SUVs.

Good thread. This picture also shows how bike lanes are de facto safety infrastructure for people with mobility devices.

As part of NYC DOT's quarterly Vision Zero update, we highlighted a few recent street redesigns that brought major safety gains. On Schermerhorn St, pedestrian injuries dropped 31% while bike ridership grew 30%. As we've seen all over, bike lanes make streets safer for pedestrians, too.

You see this particularly in the crime discussion nationally, but folks outside of New York City (and often times in New York City) do not grasp the scale and scope of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

@nyc-dot.bsky.social is making up math here. There are roughly 300 intersections on the UWS or ~2,400 potential daylighting spots, many of which are already bus stops or fire hydrants.

@galeabrewer.bsky.social got some bad information.

Why are we bean counting street safety in the first place?

Visited Hoboken today and experienced things that New York officials don’t want you to, like benches at a major train hall and widespread corner daylighting for better visibility (including outside a police station).

Asked about potential parking backlash, Adams says:

“It's just important for us to realize there are sacrifices we have to make. And these bins don't take up all the parking spaces, and it's a good trade-off.”
