Only yesterday I said to the tech guy fixing my laptop that I would literally pay more for an AI free OS when the machine needs replacing.
The first school to market itself as AI free is going to corner the market on people interested in actually learning. And I would not be surprised if rich families and the children of people creating this tech were the first movers.
My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

Kagan: "If Purcell prevents such a ruling, it gives every State the
opportunity to hold an unlawful election."

Indeed. What is to stop a state legislature from enacting a new election law just before an election, knowing a court can't put it on hold?

Fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs of critically endangered African penguins remain. In two key colonies in South Africa, the vast majority of the breeding birds likely starved to death because of a collapse of their food supplies, according to a new study.

This is no different than refusing to allow Obama to appoint Garland to the Supreme Court because a new president would take office in ten months, and then confirming Barrett eight days before the 2020 election. There are no laws, no rules, no norms, only Calvinball.
The word "eve" is doing a lot of work here in the Court's 'decision'

I don't have any illusions about the United States military, what it does, or how many times this has happened before

but the fact that they sat there for 41 minutes, watched two scared, human beings desperately struggling to stay alive, and then murdered them has fucked me up so deeply

Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents.

They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

They’ve been held outside in the rain while in their underwear.

At least three citizens were pregnant when agents detained them.
More Than 170 U.S. Citizens Have Been Held by Immigration Agents. They’ve Been Kicked, Dragged and Detained for Days.
The government does not track how often immigration agents grab citizens. So ProPublica did. Our tally — almost certainly incomplete — includes people who were held for days without a lawyer. And near...

The dripping contempt the right wing SCOTUS majority holds for district judges is truly a sight to behold every time. When they deign to give actual reasons for their shadow docket holdings, it’s “look at the absolute idiots who keep getting everything wrong!”

New research suggests AI chatbots can shift people’s political views more effectively than campaign ads on TV.

However, researchers are concerned AI companies could “set the models up to push for one side or another.”
Voters’ minds are hard to change. AI chatbots are surprisingly good at it.

The fact that four hostile drones tried to hit Zelenskyy’s plane & it’s barely a blip in the news cycle should terrify everyone. We’ve been dragged so deep into the chaos era that an attempted strike on a world leader doesn’t even break through. When this becomes normal, the world is in real danger.

To trivialize this as a "sex scandal" is, in the kindest construction, myopic. A high status journalist (inter alia) sat on highly incriminating information about the guy currently bringing measles and whooping cough back as head of HHS!
this is extraordinary. too many people in my profession have circled the wagons around someone who lacks the moral sense of a child

If the Supreme Court pulled something like this while FDR was president, he would have had them escorted out of the building and nailed the doors shut. When the Dems take power, they should consider that.
This ruling only temporarily lets Texas use its new gerrymander for 2026, but by 2028, SCOTUS may have gutted the Voting Rights Act & the Texas GOP may have re-gerrymandered the map *again*, making it moot.

This SCOTUS has repeatedly let the GOP use illegal gerrymanders for at least one election
