This is very bad.
Vancouver's 2026 draft budget has PASSED.

Approved on a 7-4 vote on party lines, with ABC in favour and councillors Fry/Bligh/Orr/Maloney opposed.

Property tax freeze, $50 million more for VPD, and cuts to Arts, Culture, Planning and Sustainability departments, among others.

Full story to come.

There was a weird week years ago when @kateatherley.bsky.social and I started using mechanical keyboards around the same time. They're so loud and retro and satisfying! But also, absolute nightmares during meetings. Today, bittersweetly, I will be swapping mine out for a quiet (smaller) one.

There are few things more delightful than your teenager having the same best friends since kindergarten. Now they're all six feet all, arguing about how to make pancakes after a sleepover. They all crammed into my kid's small bedroom like they have since they were seven. So much sucks; this does not

Lemme give you a little bit of a picture of my September. I had broken my foot in mid-August days after listing this book for pre-order. Having my lower leg immobilized had led to a blood clot; I was uncomfortable and stressed out and it had been many months since I'd been able to take a holiday. 1/

Every so often, connections spiral around through years and contexts and intersect at exactly the right moment. Anyway, I've just added a new project to my gorgeous Gantt chart and I'm just so excited about it.

I love getting prompted to set up passkeys at more and more websites, for security. But they all say it's the most secure option without mentioning literally any movie where some poor schmuck has their finger chopped for exactly this purpose.

Worth noting that because Sim brought forward his proposal for a property tax freeze requiring millions in cuts with just weeks left in the budget process, this is not up for public debate and is not outlined in the documents available to councillors when they vote on this
SCOOP: Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is planning to eliminate the city's sustainability and climate department under the guise of a push to prevent increases to property taxes in his proposed 2026 budget.
