Made my triumphant return to the hometown theater to see Marty Supreme but making sure I loudly say I saw it a month ago so they know I'm cooler than they are

Fellowship nailed this so well and it’s understandable if a shame that TT and ROTK have to tilt more into plot. There’s a melancholy in almost every scene of Fellowship that is more sporadic in the other two, a sense that every new place you see is something you’re seeing for the last time.
what I love about LotR is that it is at its heart about moving through a melancholy landscape largely filled with ruins, faded histories and legends - I would have filmed it that way and cut the fights to a bare minimum, plus add Merry's interest in comparative philology as a major plot element

Watching the new Criterion 4K of EYES WIDE SHUT on the day a slew of new Jeffrey Epstein pictures are released is uh……a bit surreal!

Being an economist seems fun. When ppl say the material reality of their lives has gotten worse you get to chuckle and say “sounds like you’ve come down with a bad case of the vibes” before pointing to the real economy, a theoretical set of abstract values aggressively massaged for max positivity
I think this strengthens the case for Stancilism.

Immediate post pandemic economy was *weird* in a way that made it hard to compare it to similar years.

But we've got low unemployment and low inflation now. Very hard to make the case that now is worse than the Volcker shock.
UMich consumer sentiment (current conditions) at 50.4 is a new all-time low -- going back to data from the 1970s.

In honor of Rob Reiner, I am going to lib out for a second and saying our president is a fucking loser and embarrassment. Like nothing matters, but fuck that tool bag. Sometimes it just needs to be said even though we all pretty much agree.

One way that the reaction to Rob Reiner's murder mirrors Charlie Kirk's is that the best way to eulogize each of them is to quote their words, and in both cases, doing so pisses off conservatives.
Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

I don’t begrudge anyone for finding Avatar too corny but when people are just like “yeah it’s good spectacle but that’s it” I am so bewildered because we are STARVED for spectacle. I’d rather see a $350 million movie where every red cent went on the screen than one where $250M went to actor salaries

The fact that these guys missed the bus over and over is part of the charm, but you just have to sit back and marvel at how gloriously they whiffed this one. They recorded one of the greatest songs ever and then shelved it cause they thought it wasn't quite ready. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVEQ...
