I think for me it’s partly about the constant elaborate performances of masculinity that don’t quite fit. Saul is a performance. He’s a hypermasculated performance, even. The loud suits, the aggressive confidence, the sleazy womanizing persona, the constant jokes about his ex-wives. Saul is Jimmy doing a bit about what a certain kind of man is supposed to be. “Saul” is a dysphoria hoodie. The show keeps offering Jimmy templates for How To Be A Man. Chuck’s version is prestigious, respectable, rule-following, cold, Howard’s version is slick, professional, and warm, arguably actually emotionally healthy and yet Jimmy HATES IT. The criminal world’s version is tough, transactional, then Saul as hustler masculinity, the showman, the guy who’s always “on” And Jimmy keeps trying them on. None of them fit. But he keeps reaching for the next one because what’s the alternative? The Saul suits are loud and excessive in a way that reads as compensation, like he’s trying to fill space, to be undeniably something even if that something is a cartoon. Also there’s the name thing. Jimmy has SO MANY names. James Morgan McGill. Jimmy. Slippin’ Jimmy. Saul Goodman. Gene Takavic. Viktor St. Claire. None of them quite fit!! The show treats “what is your real name” as genuinely unanswerable which is FASCINATING to me. (You can just be a girl Jimmy!!!) I’m also fascinated with how Jimmy is constantly being told he doesn’t belong. He can pass the bar, he can wear the suits, he can do the job, but Chuck, the bar, the legal establishment keep telling him he’s not really one of them. He didn’t go to the right school. He doesn’t have the right background. He’s faking it!!! There’s something very “you’ll never be a real [x]” about the way the show’s institutional gatekeepers treat him. He meets every formal requirement and it’s never enough because they can clock something essential about him that disqualifies him. And then when Jimmy DOES get institutional approval (Davis & Main) he hates it! So much of the show is about wanting to be yourself and finding out who that is. The question the show keeps asking is: what would a space that’s actually for Jimmy look like? And I simply think she should take HRT about it. Also as someone in my replies pointed out there’s that one scene where Jimmy and Kim have sex where Jimmy pretends to be Kim the whole time and Kim pretends to be her male boss. And it was Jimmy’s idea! He wanted to embody Being The Girlfriend in an intimate context!!! VINCE WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THIS

They called them Near Abroad Direct Action Operations, NADA Ops. The "joke" in the CalSec cafeterias, which made its way out later in the hearings was that "What does the operator say when asked if there are civilians in the area? Nada...oops!". Even decades later, Arizona didn't find it funny.

this is less common because self identifying as a transhumanist has died down now that LLMs have dragged futurism's name through the mud, but the fact that some people called themselves transhumanists and were also transphobic still offends me on a deep, aching level, right in my bones

Have you ever heard of the term "Luddite" from an elder?
Stanhill, Lancashire, 1764. Wear and carpenter James Hargreaves invents the Spinning Jenny, the first practical spinning-frame, to make the tedious task of producing cloth a little bit faster. He doesn't know it yet, but this will destroy the world. Spurred by inventions like his, the industrial revolution will transform everything -- work power, the wealth of nations. Society as we know it began here, and it wasn't great for everyone. But a group of weavers and textile workers saw this future coming. And did their best to prevent it. "Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" The standard narrative does that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed. Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight. And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it. Factory work paid little, since "the machines" did "the real work" human labourers were deemed unimportant and replaceable. FUN FACT!: Factory owners preferred to hire ORPHANS since less people would notice if they were maimed or killed on the job! Now the owners quickly realized the workers might notice they did all the work for almost no pay. If they went on STRIKE or ARGUED FOR HGHER WAGES, this would threaten their tremendous wealth. In 1799, Parliament passed the Combination Act, which made FORMING TRADE UNIONS, COLLECTIVE BARGAINING, AND GOING ON STRIKE ILLEGAL. Organizing against the rich became a crime. If you were living through it, opposing the industrial revolution wasn't techno-phobia. It was SELF-DEFENSE. The combination act forced unions underground into secret societies. And the greatest secret of all was their leader - Ned Ludd. Ned had been a folk character for years. In one version after being whipped by his master, he smashed two knitting frames in a rage. In more fanciful versions, he then escaped to the Sherwood forest, here he lived among the animals as their king. Some versions specifically call him 'Much Better Than Robin Hood'.

Lexie and I have been going through Torchship doing this rules rewrite that's basically just addressing all the tech debt from four years of writing + reformatting for clarity, and colour-coding text (bold for essential rules, blue for examples, and red for commentary) works so well??
