i think about this way too much - how tech companies act vs. “legacy” companies that produce consumer goods, news, media or entertainment.
Six people died from tampered Tylenol and the company pulled 30 million bottles off the market. ChatGPT is accused of urging seven people towards suicide, and OpenAI just assures us they’re still working out the kinks. Billions in investment, zero accountability.
OpenAI faces 7 lawsuits claiming ChatGPT drove people to suicide, delusions

AI slop for political communication is a questionable response to the whole "we have to better explain our policies to ordinary people" discourse of the last decade or so.. It gives the vibe of a low-barrier explanation, without explaining anything really.
There’s a growing & deeply problematic tendency to use #genAI for political and historical education Take this example from Germany, which translates as: «Hey AI, who should I vote for.» What’s typical here is that AI is not only addressed as pseudo-person but also as a kind of impartial judge

Currently reading Platformland by @richardpope.org for my Masters. I have rarely used my red as in disagreement marking so little because the patterns described are just so intuitive when having grown up on the internet.

I cannot overstate just how awful this stupid fucking bill proposal is

- adding backdoors into encryption on OS level
- "sniff" every single message before it gets encrypted AND SAVE IT CENTRALLY
- let a goddamn hallucinating "AI" mark people as criminals

it needs to be stopped, post haste

should have been clearer here but what i personally meant by 'good enough' is that it is good enough at making ppl think the tech does what they say it does. and so ppl believe they are having a different experience w/ the models than they are because it is good enough to give a user that impression
all of this is basically a trojan horse for my sinking feeling right now that generative AI will be 'good enough' and that's...potentially a very bad outcome!

I agree there is some naivity in the article, both regarding this and the appeal to "full humanity" later on. The real value of the article is in its discussion of higher education though.
I won't deny that the implications and challenges are massive, and we're only beginning to understand them. But claiming that a chatbot already «has effectively achieved Ph.D.-level competence across» a variety of disciplines? That's just repeating baseless industry hype. We should know better …
Uff. But true.

After mostly shrugging off Trump’s assault on government for the last five months, establishment Democrats have finally found something to be outraged about: Zohran Mamdani’s primary win.
