The working group Landscape Ecology and Ecosystem Dynamics, along with the tree ring lab DendroGreif, is now active on Bluesky! We are looking forward to share new and exciting research, the day-to-day events and hopefully become part of a very active Dendro-Community!

I am teaching a course on ancient trees and tree rings at the NY Botanical Garden on Sunday, October 26th and Sunday, November 2nd.

We will learn about past environments, the amazing lives of trees, and what old trees tend to look like.

In the #FeMoPhys project, leaf gas exchange and #sapflow were measured to investigate the temporal lag between stem water transport and leaf gas exchange, while also testing sap flow as a tool to estimate leaf-level gas exchange in mature trees. Preliminary results were presented at this years GFÖ!
Poster from Joraine Schmoldt for this years GFÖ, title: "Diurnal patterns of leaf gas exchange and sap flow in Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur, Larix decidua, and Pseudotsuga menziesii"

🌲 A study from Berlin-Brandenburg shows that mixed forests adapt better to droughts than pine monocultures – even if they have lower growth rates. More biodiversity = more resilience in hot, dry summers.

In this study, we attempt to shift the perspective on near-ground forest microclimate towards smaller organisms. We aimed to quantify how ground cover type further modifies air temp., air humidity and soil temp. on small scales. Our initial findings were presented at this year's GFÖ in Würzburg!

Last week, the international student excursion to the high Tatra mountains (Slovakia) took place. We explored the mountains and talked about natural and cultural landscape-forming processes. Among other things, there was a 20km hike, an overnight stay in a mountain hut, and a visit to an ice cave.

Just rediscovered a beautiful picture from last winter. Here we were installing a temperature profile (5 and 10 m) on the tree.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.🧵

How do tropical #trees deal with droughts? The answer is published today in @science.org

Our pantropical #treering analysis revealed 2.5% growth reduction during #drought years. Yet, growth declined by >10% in 1/4 of 500 study sites, and in hotter & drier regions.

Increasing drought pressure under anthropogenic climate change may jeopardize the potential of tropical forests to capture carbon in woody biomass and act as a long-term carbon dioxide sink. To evalua...

🚨 Study by Keck, F., Peller, T., Alther, R. et al. reveals the negative impact of human activity on Earth's biodiversity across all species and ecosystems.📉🧪

Human activities drive biodiversity loss both directly and indirectly.🌍

More via @nature.com:
The global human impact on biodiversity - Nature
Key measures of biodiversity were quantified and found to be affected by human pressures that shifted community composition and decreased local diversity across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
