Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

I love writing for games and getting to slip in little bits of historiography. In one storylet I’ve covered ambiguity in material culture, “truth” and “emotional truth”, and the need to research the everyday alongside the exceptional 🫡

The thing is - headlines like this *really* embolden actual antisemites. There will be active Scottish neo-Nazis reading this and thinking its giving them the all-clear to come out from the shadows and promote their hatred widely.

Lies for political purpose like this have dangerous consequences.

You can always count on Mckenna to have the most bone-headed take on any subject.

Once again, it's not antisemitic to condemn the actions of the Israeli state.
Shut up Mckenna.

The obsession with objectivity over the past few decades is, in my opinion, one of the leading agents in the war on media literacy.

We need to learn to embrace ambiguity, arbitrariness, and above all subjectivity. These are at the heart of critical thought and media literacy.

I genuinely don't know if I have another job application in me. Why are they so much work?

Why are they so long? Why do some places decide to use an AI chatbot instead of an application form? Why are some live job ads accepting applications for jobs that aren't currently available?

To pretend that there isn't very real, very harmful hatred directed towards Jewish people is frankly disgusting.
leekenny.bsky.social
I despair to say this, since it shouldn't need to be said - antisemitism is a very real problem and one that any good progressive should oppose.

I know a lot of people are falsely labelling support for Gaza and Palestine in general as anti-Semitism when it isn't. But...

I don't know where this revisionism has come from about the suffragettes - people saying "if the suffragettes were around today, they'd be considered terrorists."

The suffragettes were arrested and tortured, sexually assaulted and beaten by the state. They *were* considered terrorists!

British politics is basically a doom spiral of increasingly unhinged hostile policies.

Reform says something unhinged
⬇️
Labour counters with their own unhinged policy
⬇️
Tories shout from back they'll be even more unhinged
⬇️
Reform announces different unhinged proposal in response
⬇️
And repeat...🔁

You can protest against Israel’s genocide in Gaza and unequivocally condemn the antisemitic terror attack in Manchester.

Don’t let politicians or the media tell you that you can’t do both.

I think criticising the fact that the statue of Dr Elsie Inglis was designed by a man in what seems like a bit of a stitch up after that man designed half the statues in Edinburgh is valid.

I don't think criticising it for not being "feminine" enough is. Women are allowed not to be feminine.

We've got people like Charlie Kirk (glorified podcasters that feel emboldened to say horrific things as long as they pretend it's part of a "debate") in politics. We need *less* of them.

I just don't understand why ProQuest are hellbent on making their ebook platform worse in every way they can. It was perfectly fine the way it was. No, I don't want an AI "research assistant", I want the old, functional Ebook reader back.

If I have recently followed you, don't be alarmed!! I'm currently trying to move my bluesky away from bleak political commentary and towards my areas of research - interactive performance; playable theatre; street arts; clowning

During my three years as a GTA in an arts department I have seen two rounds of redundancy, and the closing of the GTA scheme. I have applied for and been rejected from both opportunities that were viable for me as there were more qualified candidates. *Both* of them.

It’s depressing that even the “very unlikely long shot” post doc positions are quickly disappearing.

“Apply for everything” doesn’t even feel viable when there just… is barely anything to apply for

Is there a reason I ask that the Times are using a picture of asylum seekers in a boat to describe rules for migrants who came on legal routes such as skilled worker visas for doctors?

Tough new conditions to be imposed on migrants who want to settle in the UK will not apply to more than a million people who arrived in the UK under the post-Brexit immigration surge

At this point, Reform UK are writing our government's policies - Labour just let Farage announce policies and then pick which ones they think will do the best with voters.

Mahmood says she will introduce new conditions for indefinite leave to remain:

Lived here 10 years not 5
Being in work
Not taking a penny in benefits
No criminal record
Giving back to community eg volunteering

Compulsory 'voluntary work' is just unpaid Labour.

Effectively they want to make migrants do community service for the crime of wanting to live in the UK

We stand up for the vulnerable, not because they will eventually come for us — make no mistake, they will — but because it is the right thing to do.

It seems that we have forgotten the difference between being racist and being "a racist". In a racist system, many people do racist things without deliberate racist intent, but there is no way that you can logically conclude that it is not racist to support racism?
Supporting Reform’s ‘racist policy’ does not make voters racist, says Rachel Reeves – UK politics live
Chancellor backs Keir Starmer’s statement that policy to end indefinite leave to remain is racist, but says many Reform supporters would be ‘horrified’ by it

The UK job market is currently oversaturated with staffing agencies hiring for warehousing.

Half the job adverts don't tell you how many hours, where you'll be working (even a general idea so I know if I can get there) etc...

This is what we mean when we say there are no real jobs out there.

Ok. They’ve pissed me off.

I’m back to tell you 3 things about ID cards:

1. Migrants ALREADY HAVE biometric ID cards & govts have been trying to digitise them for years w repeated fuckups & failures causing complete chaos - they don’t work, you do not want that system for you.
