The epigraph to Neil Postman’s “Technopoly”
Whether or not it draws on new scientific research, technology is a branch of moral philosophy, not of science.

Additional to this being generally excellent, I’m cheered that the homunculus theory of mind lives on in folk psychology.

I think about the tiny OSHA guy inside of me at least once a day, but today he's basically all I can think about.
A dialogue between me and the tiny OSHA guy inside of me:

Me: I don't get it. I thought I was doing a lot better than I was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be.
How does everything feel terrible now?
The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.
Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.
Tiny OSHA Me: BOSS, THE FASCISM.

there are almost certainly more people — more blue collar laborers, specifically — involved in the cultivation and production of chardonnay grapes and wine than in coal

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

A friend writes:

I saw someone's post somewhere that talked about how their
nine-year-old and all his friends have started using "That's AI"
instead of "I don't believe you."

Mom: "We're having dinosaur meat for dinner tonight."
Kid: "That's AI."

CHOTINER: Now this wasn’t a full-time employee?

MR. MCGEE: No, no, Part-timer.

CHOTINER: And you didn’t like him personally?

MR. MCGEE: Oh, I mean, it was about his whole kind. Not just this kid.

CHOTINER: You said this in the workplace.

MCGEE: Yeah, at the 5-and-dime. Several times, actually.

The @nteunion.bsky.social member who is the HSR involved in this doesn't want the spotlight, but he has been heroic on this issue.

He knows who he is, and his colleagues know who he is, so I won't name him here - but congratulations on standing up for your colleagues. ✊

The psychological distress across #ANU while Renew ANU has been underway has been enormous. @nteunion.bsky.social has been working with members to prevent the most serious outcomes.

It shouldn't have to come to this for the ANU to provide a safe workplace.

What have we got in the bank?

1) Roundtables on the practice turn, ontological security, and historical international relation.

2) An unreleased recording of a "live taping" a few years back at the LSE.

3) An episode on @profptj.bsky.social's favorite "hate read," the Clash of Civilizations.
