Being a friend of the Israeli government, in 2025, means aiding and abetting an authoritarian, genocidal Kahanist regime. That's Rachel Reeves.

Being a friend of Israeli society, on the other hand, means acting to stop Kahanism and to demand recognition and accountability for the Gaza genocide.

unintended side effect of being a jew online: you feel pressured to have an opinion on the election which you could not have voted in, for the mayor of a city youve never been to, which is in a country youve never been to, and whose policies will not affect you.

As we read about Sodom in this week's Torah portion, a brief reminder that according to Jewish tradition the sin of Sodom had nothing to do with sexuality, it was that they criminalized helping the poor and the visitor.
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

Judaism is like Math: it might be hard to discover new things, but you could spend your life learning what exists and it would not be a waste, and the applications are without end

No, I don't think applied math does use the scientific method. It's used *for* science, but it's not arrived at *by* science.

Actually there has always been one monolithic Halacha.

Of course the Jewish people have a wide variety of differing opinions about what it is, and that's fine, there are many valid perspectives
Much like the fact there is no one Sharia law, there’s never been one monolithic halakhah. But here we have people inside the house trying to claim there’s one way of doing Judaism. Conflicting minhagim have always existed. Even the notion of rabbinic Judaism as Judaism hasn’t always been true

When people say they want the country to follow "Biblical values," they always mean hating queer people and never mean canceling everyone's debts after a certain period of time.

Shema the Beit Shammai way!

Morning shema = standing up
Bedtime shema = lying down
Depression shema = curled up into a ball
Any Shema can be the bedtime Shema if you’ve got enough depression

"There are some things for which there is no forgiveness. Absolutely none. And that hard fact is impossible to learn to live with."
It’s long past time that I take responsibility for what I wrote on Israel/Palestine in ON REPENTANCE AND REPAIR.

& with the Gaza genocide, our thinking about what amends & healing may ever involve is even more urgent.

Even if there may never be “forgiveness” or “atonement.”

I often see people use "Zionist" in a way that is not a critique of Zionism as an ideology ("Zionists control the media!" "Zionists are why you don't know about queer victims of the Holocaust!"). Then when I call this antisemitic, I get "I said Zionists, not Jews, so you're the real antisemite!"

tbh what most frustrates me about i/p is that i feel that there is such potential for synergy between jews and non-jews, israelis and palestinians and folks from elsewhere and instead identity terms and fear and snap judgments create walls that prevent conversation and listening to conversations had

These are hard times. Thinking of friends with dear ones in Iran. Of the people in Gaza, and the occupied territories. Of the good people in Israel.
I admit: I take in the news and wonder, how can this turn out well? Is this the end of the world as we knew it?
The bitter harvest of last November.

Netanyahu has spent the better part of two decades trying to strong arm the United States into an unprovoked war against Iran and finally found a president stupid enough to do it for him. Unbelievable.

Under the smokescreen of war:

Two days ago, Israel’s Higher Planning Council for the West Bank allowed IDF training in Firing Zone 918. This means the total demolition of 12 villages—home to around 2,800 people—and the final stage of ethnic cleansing in Masafer Yatta.

If your political education happened in Palestine-supportive spheres, the word Intifada has a positive, liberatory and inspiring meaning for you.

Send queer and trans kids to camp with each other so they can actually be in a space for themselves for once:
I’m hanging out at the last day of Camp Indigo Point. Tomorrow they get their phones back and learn about what SCOTUS did while they were having Queer Prom.

We also start fundraising to make the magic happen again, no matter what, next year form-renderer-app.donorperfect.io/give/ashrei-...
