Humbled to announce that we received a New Innovator award. I thank the NIH’s civil servants for their hard work during a stressful funding cycle. I thank the leadership (and chair, Marc Diamond) at UTSW for betting on my lab’s high risk, high reward research. www.utsouthwestern.edu/newsroom/art...

Cool. Really cool. You kind of expect it from Reto.

We present multi-immersion Oblique Plane microscope (miOPM), a light-sheet platform that can be adapted to a wide range of applications, from sensitive live cell imaging to imaging organs and cleared tissues.

My first post on bluesky 🦋
I missed *the old* platform, glad to be back, looking forward to see what bluesky can be.
Now that the first post is out of the way, hopefully the threshold for posting more is a bit lower 🫠

How do cells sense & respond to lipid imbalances? What happens when a disease-relevant enzyme is blocked? Shiying Huang investigates phosphoinositide lipids with the Balla lab & discovers an integrated cellular response that boosts alternate lipid synthesis pathways! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Very exciting work. Shows how interfering with the levels of one lipid class leads to changes of other lipids that are not directly metabolically connected as the cell tries to maintain both lipid flux balance and biophysical membrane properties.

If you’re applying to your dream lab for an internship/PhD/postdoc, always send a second email 1-2 weeks after the first one if you don’t hear back.

I promise we will be grateful rather than annoyed. My email inbox is a disaster and I’m quite junior - and very few of us have secretarial support

Can’t believe Germany 🇩🇪 has an entire day off so that people can listen to the new Taylor Swift album 🎧🎶 😂

Any lab here open to hosting a visiting scientist next year?
For someone who is interested in advanced microscopy and cellular mechanics (and can still do experiments 🙋)?

German Reunification Day invites both gratitude and reflection.
Gratitude, because the peaceful revolution of 1989 was nothing short of a miracle — a bloodless dismantling of a repressive regime.
Reflection, because the wounds of the transition still mark the country —and because

not going to pretend I am an expert on the studies, some conflicting somewhat, on gifted programs in schools but one beef I have with those types of programs is they often prioritize the kind of gifted kids who end up being the dumbest mother fuckers in the country, like people who go to Yale law

Yes, yes, Europe has its benefits. Walkable cities. Cultural heritage. Amazing food. Little gun violence. Healthcare. Governments that are not shut down. But the number of website pop-ups asking one to accept cookies renders the continent pretty much unlivable.

I think the R01 is basically a non-starter at NIGMS now. Data from NIH Reporter for new and competing awards, comparing number of R01s issued relative to R35s (MIRA). This has major ramifications for basic science and basic science investigators that are not yet in the MIRA pool
Graph showing total R35+R01 awards issued by NIGMS from 2020 to 2025. R01 in black showing a steep decline. R35 showing an increase. Total awards in 2025 slightly up from 2024 but these years are lower than 2020-2023
