I made a "critical 4E" starter pack, of people who are sympathetic to 4E cognition—that is: embodied, embedded, enacted, and extended—cognition, but also interested in exploring its moral and social and political implications.

This is a cool paper “chemical synapses have a major role in brain rhythms…post-synaptic neural firing requires rhythmic action of populations of neurons…waves of ion fluctuations in the chemical soup surrounding the neurons are important” #neurosky

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all

One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

I know this might further contribute to my increasing professional irrelevance, but I think I have to expand my journal boycott from Springer and Elsevier journals to Wiley journals too. It's all rather terrible.
jacquelyngill.bsky.social
The new Wiley journal review system is an absolute nightmare. Editorial assistants have been replaced by a clunky, AI-enabled website that makes it harder to find and invite reviewers. Associate editor workloads have increased. I'm not convinced the invitations to reviewers are even going through.

(ps. Here's the data if you don't believe me.

The median small family farmer in the US is a millionaire with a 6-figure income. Yes, after you take out farm debts & expenses.)
USDA data table showing "residence farms" (the official USDA designation for "small family farms" at this time) with a median net worth of $1.24M and $116K/year net income. (Net income = AFTER farm debts & expenses)

Ah that's fair. I'm not a super fan so I guess I've only heard the Carl and Molly episodes.
liao.shen-yi.org
However, they now have some new episodes. It looks like philosopher Eleanor Gordon-Smith has joined as a host!!

I am not much of a podcast person, but again, our kids approve of this one!

Our kids independently (I swear, we didn't even know about it) discovered that Australian Broadcasting Company philosophy for kids podcast called Short & Curly a couple of years ago. Even though the hosts weren't philosophers, the content seemed quite good.

NEW: breach of Discord age verification data.

Including some users passports & DLs

Age verification is a badly implemented data grab wrapped in a moral panic.

Mark my words, as age verification mandates expand, we'll end up more surveilled and less secure. 1/

Here I was talking about the consequences of the changes in classifications (and who was labelled as belonging in them) for conceptualising biological studies. Our discussion focused on the use of such classifications in microbiome research.

Feels like a natural experimental philosophy of medicine project: is “addictive” an inherently normative term? (My guess: yes.)

I see talk about things being "designed to be addictive" (like cigarettes, social media, online sports betting, etc.)

Is there a scientific distinction between "designed to be addictive" and "designed to get you to use them more"? Or are these just synonyms?

I just couldn't stop thinking about how weird sperm whale mouths are and yet how perfectly shaped for inserting giant squid into
A scanned pencil sketch of a faceoff between a giant squid and a sperm whale. The squid looks cute and alarmed and its mantle is labeled TAB A. The whale looks cute and happy and its mouth is labeled SLOT A. Tab A does look like it would fit perfectly in slot A. The squid says "I strongly disagree with this diagram" and the whale responds "You can't disagree with evolution."
