Also "its not censorship cuz technically they can sell their game elsewhere and you cant just force a platform to publish literally any game" is just kinda ignoring the greater context of it all in a way that i feel a journalist should feel a bit more shame over

Data shows that when presented with ID checks, people are more likely to just give up instead of entering sensitive information, which they are rightfully mistrustful of, making it an enticing option for those wanting to censor certain content.

As online ID check laws spread, companies are working out how to comply. It’s Day 5 of our week of action- we’re putting the spotlight on YouTube.

YouTube rolled out age verification this summer to appease lawmakers, smoothing the way for more dangerous laws to pass.

Liability is one main issue — most of these laws don't have "safe harbor" provisions that protect devices (or platforms) if someone finds a way to get around them.

BUT ALSO JUST GENERAL WEIRDNESS AROUND SEX

Apple, the original tech Victorian, will still only refer to it as "that kind of content."

Both privacy and child safety experts agree that device-based restrictions are the most effective way of keeping kids from seeing porn. And your phone, tablet and computer already have the age-information (and technology) to do block it.

So why are Apple, Google and Microsoft so resistant?
What would ethical age verification look like online?
Current laws are raising alarm bells, but there's a better solution out there.
