🚨Working Paper Alert🚨

"QB or Not QB? Measuring Discrimination in Football Labor Markets"

TL;DR

I find that there is significant discrimination when recruiting QBs from HS to college (and from college to the NFL!) based on their race.. and this costs teams wins🏆 and money💰 1/n

This package is absolutely fantastic. 100% recommend for all your table needs.

{tinytable} 0.14.0 for #RStats makes it super easy to draw tables in html, tex, docx, typ, md & png.

There are only a few functions to learn, but don't be fooled! Small 📦s can still be powerful.

Check out the new gallery page for fun case studies.

Had the absolute pleasure of watching “One Battle After Another” last night. What a masterful piece. The story, the cinematography, the performances, the score. Very current for the times. PTA at his best. Go see it in theaters is you can. Almost 3hrs of perfection.

Clearly not the most important news coming out of Oregon tonight, but I just added a recession bars example to the tinyplot “Tips & tricks” vignette. grantmcdermott.com/tinyplot/vig... #rstats

This.

No TT/non-TT/VAP job will be offered to an int'l candidate, since it requires an H1-B until the green card is issued.

This process takes at least a couple of years.

I am beyond excited to announce that ggplot2 4.0.0 has just landed on CRAN.

It's not every day we have a new major #ggplot2 release but it is a fitting 18 year birthday present for the package.

Get an overview of the release in this blog post and be on the lookout for more in-depth posts #rstats

Nice post by @jamesbrandecon.bsky.social on the scaling benefits that come from offloading your big regression jobs to a database. jamesbrandecon.github.io/blog/posts_h...

(Showcasing some new-ish 📦 s that he, @apoorvalal.com & myself have been working on, but haven't really advertised yet.)

Getting back into sewing, made BobDylan a copy of his Japanese bow tie (the shitty version, of course). We might add these to the fall collection of #BobsShittyBandanas. I’ll keep you posted.

It's been 2 years (+ 1 month) since I left academia. In case anyone is wondering, I have zero regrets. Indeed, I'm living my best life and am so happy I made the leap.

If you're considering leaving too, here are some thoughts on how to explore your options/find a job you'll love...

In data, as in life, nothing’s perfect. You can have it accurate, timely, or cheap — and it's a tradeoff. The BLS opts for timely, then revises when more info arrives to improve accuracy, without blowing out the cost. That’s not a flaw, it’s the trade-off baked into every statistic.

I've been working on a new tool, Refine, to make scholars more productive. If you're interested in being among the very first to try the beta, please read on.

Refine leverages the best current AI models to draw your attention to potential errors and clarity issues in research paper drafts.

We each find our way through these times

As an academic, I am doing this:

Uplift those whose research you admire. Diversify the academy.

Many ways to do this:

-Nominate for awards (did 2 yesterday)
-If you are in an academy, nominate to it (did 3 this month)
-cite them in a paper and/or talk

#rstats #econsky PSA: The next release of `fixest` will include some important changes (plus cool new features).

E.g. Fixed-effects regs will now default to 'iid' SEs rather than clustered. github.com/lrberge/fixe...

You can install and test drive the dev version from R-universe; see the README.
From the fixest NEWS file: the new default VCOV is iid for all estimations. To change the default to the way it was, place setFixest_vcov(all = "cluster", no_FE = "iid") in your .Rprofile.
