I have seen people making the explicit claim "we should invent/normalize slurs for people who use AI/LLMs". I'm not sure if those who make that claim already use the term "slur" wrong because "people who use certain technology" isn't subject that can be harmed in the first place? I'm not sure

My unified theory of political discourse centers around the fact that the quote post was invented in 2015

I increasingly think the subreddit model is the best conceptual way to structure a social media platform, even if actually existing Reddit I’m pretty meh about. You gotta let people enforce their own community norms, but those norms have to be opt-in

a lot of people want bluesky to be run like a small subreddit

Haven't read this yet (i'll do it soon), i just mention in advance that i think that "falling" into this is more likely to autistic people, who are nevertheless slightly alienated from other people. I mean seriously

AI always calling your ideas “fantastic” can feel inauthentic, but what are sycophancy’s deeper harms? We find that in the common use case of seeking AI advice on interpersonal situations—specifically conflicts—sycophancy makes people feel more right & less willing to apologize.

I have seen in bluesky academics posting and reposting proposals that try to invent new slurs for _people_ who use AI. Like, everyone who uses LLM is [slur] and saying that ought to be normalised

Jumping here just to mention, that i became interested in this particular consciousness-narrative-connection just after reading a certain sf novel (Eversion by Alastair Reynolds). It literally changed my philosophical worldview and made me what i am. Avoid spoilers, just read without any prior info

I continue to have the oddest interactions with people whom I suspect *literally do not believe in the existence of atoms*.

They might nominally claim they believe in atoms, but nothing in their belief network includes any kind of atom-modelling or grappling with the consequences here.

everyone still holds on to a weird puritan/calvinist assumption of antimaterialism that they never confront and get really uncomfortable when they sense it might be confronted

Well, you can in fact store and MRI scan of a human brain in an Excel spreadsheet, and MRI machines get better ever year...

There comes a point where you have to start believing in magic to justify the idea that excel spreadsheets can't be conscious in any disposition whatsoever

The entire convo around ai has left the realm of fact for nearly everyone. It's just thoughtless rhetoric all the way down now.

And folks with an interest in how these things work just trying to keep their heads down and not get caught up in a startups fraudulent IPO or a social media dogpile.

man the current wave of ai discourse is one of the bleakest i've seen. some of the smartest people i know within their domains spending useless hours trying to explain "no it doesn't work like that, i know this because i actually work with these for a living" to people who are like "don't care cunt"

It's important to notice, that even if actual academics posted anti-intellectual ragebait on internet, it does not entail that academics of a certain field were like that in general. It's refreshing to interact with actual people at the university and see how weird sandbox some internet place is

Vibe check: The network is a tense synthesis of high-stakes political discourse and forward-looking technological development. The most engaged content is political, indicating a charged atmosphere. There's also a strong undercurrent of platform meta-analysis and creative expression.

It's legitimately like anti-vaxxers, people misusing terms they don't understand, sharing videos and blog posts as evidence from other people who also don't know what they're talking about, and making huge claims and all sorts of weird sophistry that they don't even know are contested.
