I have seen people making the explicit claim "we should invent/normalize slurs for people who use AI/LLMs". I'm not sure if those who make that claim already use the term "slur" wrong because "people who use certain technology" isn't subject that can be harmed in the first place? I'm not sure

AI always calling your ideas “fantastic” can feel inauthentic, but what are sycophancy’s deeper harms? We find that in the common use case of seeking AI advice on interpersonal situations—specifically conflicts—sycophancy makes people feel more right & less willing to apologize.

I continue to have the oddest interactions with people whom I suspect *literally do not believe in the existence of atoms*.

They might nominally claim they believe in atoms, but nothing in their belief network includes any kind of atom-modelling or grappling with the consequences here.

The entire convo around ai has left the realm of fact for nearly everyone. It's just thoughtless rhetoric all the way down now.

And folks with an interest in how these things work just trying to keep their heads down and not get caught up in a startups fraudulent IPO or a social media dogpile.

man the current wave of ai discourse is one of the bleakest i've seen. some of the smartest people i know within their domains spending useless hours trying to explain "no it doesn't work like that, i know this because i actually work with these for a living" to people who are like "don't care cunt"

It's important to notice, that even if actual academics posted anti-intellectual ragebait on internet, it does not entail that academics of a certain field were like that in general. It's refreshing to interact with actual people at the university and see how weird sandbox some internet place is

It's legitimately like anti-vaxxers, people misusing terms they don't understand, sharing videos and blog posts as evidence from other people who also don't know what they're talking about, and making huge claims and all sorts of weird sophistry that they don't even know are contested.
