All my freelance work has started because someone liked the cut of my jib. They see my work, they have a chat, they check with others how things panned out with me.
This is what happens a lot, & it’s very 18th century: someone finds you, & likes your work. And depending on the gig they might take a chance based on your body of known work… or they will see if someone they trust will vouch for you on the invisible stuff (meeting deadlines, not being a dick, etc)

Truthfully it was peeling for a long LONG time, but it fully exploded once I realized how similar I was to a penpal.
Wanted to go through with as much as I possibly could but resources were scarce, family was (is) bigoted, and I didn't really think I had anyone to lean on with that kind of info
