Ariad is one of the about 50 Sudanese teenagers currently imprisoned on smuggling charges after arriving in Crete this and last year.

There were about 70 passengers on the boat he crossed with.

Everyone had to help a little — and so did Ariad. Anyone in his position would have done the same. 1/6

#OtD 15 Apr 1946 mine workers in Takahagi, Japan, won the right to sell coal directly after taking over their mines. Instead of striking, Japanese workers started takeovers after which they'd negotiate with management on their demands, and usually win stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8637...

The comeback of the Left in Germany is sensational. Almost written off ahead of elections, they won 6 districts and almost 9% of votes + are biggest party in Berlin and among young voters.

Also only party to not campaign on anti-immigration but to focus on affordable rent and cost of living

Quite a contrast here. Rather remarkably, Die Linke, which was polling at 3% at the start of the campaign, won the election among young people with the extreme right party, AfD in second place. Among over 70s AfD polling at half their numbers in electorate as a whole. From DW.

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.
Just filed an article about the upcoming German elections (out on Sunday) and what strikes me is how timid much of the institutional pushback against the far-right has been. Some people have distinguished themselves but for the most part it’s just been really complacent - really disappointing.

This is a powerful piece. "Witnessing & disapproving will not save us. We must be willing to act & refuse to act on the basis of what we know is right. We must build a rebellious culture of care in defiance of a death-making culture of greed. We must reject the disposal of our fellow human beings."
I wrote about Trump's executive orders, including his attacks on trans and undocumented people, and how we should be orienting ourselves to defy fascist violence in this moment. This piece includes commentary from @chasestrangio.bsky.social and @silkys13.bsky.social.

I’ve been trying to write an article on emergency preparedness when disabled. It’s so hard

I would need 10 “go bags” to account for my complex medical needs. I can’t evacuate without assistance. Many places aren’t safe for me

Disabled people need to be included in emergency plans
It's truly frightening and realistic for folks like us to know it will be very difficult for us to evacuate. As my friend and I were grousing about there's no practical way to create a go bag if you have complex medical needs. SIGH.

Younger generations feeling fed up with the system will have no avenue or outlet for their desire for economic and social progress. You remove the avenues for change and young people will feel they are no longer beholden to the social contract and their capacity for violence will increase.
