Looking forward to talking non-perennial streams with MZ tomorrow! She'll do an overview of all of the great synthesis work in the NPS literature in the last ~5 years, and I'll do a deep dive on the organization of the Aquatic Intermittency effects on Microbiomes in Streams (AIMS) project! Join us!

Teach hydro modeling? Want to introduce modeling in an intro class?

Check out this web-app, activities, and code (in case you want to spin off your own)..

Thanks @jansei.bsky.social for working with me on this, which was inspired by his HBV-lite teaching software!

Wrapping up your PhD? I’m planning to hire a postdoc in the next few months (start date flexible). Will start formally advertising soon, but you heard it here first!! Possible research topics include - critical zone hydrology, agricultural water quality, SW-GW interactions. Reach out if interested!

Recently, all the AAAS Science & Tech Policy Fellows at EPA were terminated from our positions with little notice and for no clear reason. This effectively ended a partnership that had been going since 1980 and which had brought hundreds of scientists to the EPA as fellows, many of whom stayed. 1/7

Pleased to announce my lab will soon be hiring a postdoc! Join an interdisciplinary group working on ecosystem change following the last glacial maximum in southeast Alaska. Substantial modeling skills are a big plus! Applications due April 20th. coreykrabbenhoft.com/join-us-2/

Oh I absolutely can’t wait to read this new paper! The “little bit of everything” in this paper is everything I love!

Big CONGRATS to @kacizarek.bsky.social!!! Her new paper is out in @agu.org's JGR-B!

The paper has a little bit of everything -- N biogeochemistry, intermittent stream hydrology, concentration-connectivity relationships!

Check it out here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Conceptual figure illustrating predicted biogeochemical responses to changes in network connectivity and streamflow. (a) At the watershed outlet, we predicted NO3− export would increase in response to increasing watershed‐scale connectivity and streamflow, resulting in an enrichment of NO3− downstream. As watershed‐scale connectivity (active surface drainage network length) and streamflow decrease in the dry‐down, NO3− export will decrease due to N source limitations. (b) Throughout the watershed, we predicted the seasonal dry‐down period to be the greatest potential for denitrification to occur given the availability of both NO3− and dissolved organic carbon, anoxic conditions, and decreased streamflow.

Yesterday was the darkest day of my professional life so far. Many of NSF’s best and brightest people fired indiscriminately. The terms of their firing cruel. My colleagues matter, they are valued and they make a difference. I have no words. www.npr.org/2025/02/18/n...
National Science Foundation fires roughly 10% of its workforce
NSF fired 168 employees, leaving the agency less equipped to fund a wide range of scientific research.

Just make your class watch the defense hehe! Good question though, I’ll check with Lauren to see if we can record it.
