With several new followers: I have one foot in Classics/ancient history and another in the writing community. I teach Greek history at the Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha, answer "asks" on Tumblr as public history, and write history-inspired SFF and historical fiction. Not a prolific poster here, alas.
It's that Black Friday time of year. If you know someone who likes historical fiction: young Alexander before he became "the Great." Riptide is both a small press & LGBTQ+, so give them love. This is the ebook; Amazon controls print-on-demand. Not advertising for Amazon this week. #classicsbluesky

Yes. This is how fascism operates: by constantly redefining the boundaries of The People and exercising brutal force against whoever finds themselves outside. No one is truly safe. You will find yourself on the outside at some point.
Every single American should be concerned with the rapid increase of mass surveillance under ICE. It will not go away when they feel they’ve accomplished their mission of getting rid of all the non-white people.

"Ultimately, they're people making choices." A riff on the human Alexander, not the myth, and why I (personally) find him interesting. I think we lose a great deal when we mythologize him. #ancientbluesky #classicbluesky #alexanderthegreat

Before she died, my great-grandmother told me what her mother told her as swastika uniforms took her to the gas chambers:

"Remember you're a Jew; I'll return soon." She never saw her again.

A new Coast Guard policy says that same swastika isn't hate but "potentially divisive."

Never again is now.

The banality of evil is the most important lesson to be learned by all humans. Especially right now. Many countries are being run by psychopaths capable of devastating evil acts… large & small.

Here I look at Alexander's approach to religion (+ myth) as a "polycentral strategy." Post-Granikos, Alexander increasingly began to center his religious actions on & references to WHERE he was, rather than send back "home" to Macedonia and Greece.

Alas, I fear she’s right; hard to negotiate when the other side literally does not care about the suffering of constituents except to make their enemies wince. There’s no way out that doesn’t either break the bank for health care for ACA recipients or starve a significant portion of the populace.
11/09 Senate Democrats appear poised to cave on the shutdown. It was always going to end this way. #news #breakingnews #history #storytime #angry

This is good, and should actually make us feel better.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson temporarily blocked a ruling that required Trump to fully fund SNAP because she’s playing chess, not checkers. She sent it back to the lower courts for a reason. 👀

Remember the "Israel says they will cut agreed aid by half" headlines? Then shortly after, "Israel agrees to do what they said they would do and allow aid into Gaza"?

The 'ceasefire' agreement was 600 trucks per day. Half was 300. They've allowed 100. Someone explain to me why this is okay.

Inspired by the shellacking Democrats gave Republicans in the elections yesterday. A student asked me earlier if Alexander ever faced opposition. Gave me a chance to talk about the Mutiny-that-wasn't (India) plus the real mutiny at Opis, which took ATG by surprise. What caused it + how he responded.

Don’t take it from me, listen to Snopes! Speaker Johnson signed a bill to cut $186 billion from SNAP. And again, it’s HIS party that won’t help millions of Americans put food on the table this month.
