Sorry but if there is one single US political proposition that we have tested to destruction in recent years, it’s the idea that a critical mass of swing voters see democracy vs authoritarianism as a crucial and salient issue in judging Trump. They simply do not! I don’t like it either

also (at the risk of tautology), if they want their demands to be met, they have to pick issues on which Republicans would conceivably yield. there are very limited options in this respect, I think.

this has always been the issue, but I don't think there was any world where the Senate Dem conference would go to war on any other issue -- in particular *because* their demands are so minimal it's possible to hold the conference together
