If I had the funding and discipline I'd pursue a PhD in religious studies and focus on how the particular brand of atheism that sees itself as the final protector of the Enlightenment is best understood as an offshoot of Western Christianity.
Like politics, anyone can (usually) weigh in on religion.
But FWIW: Harvard, where Pinker teaches, also has a divinity school.
It has lots of scholars who study religion for a living.
