This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

So excited for this piece by me and @deffinger.bsky.social to be out! It was inspired by science and discussion from many venues from @sfn.org to #GRCPsychedelics 🧠

Nothing has disappointed me more than watching institutions cave to ending programs they KNOW have an impact and bring in talented and qualified scientists from different backgrounds. Someday we will have to face what was done here and what we lost.

I would not be here without the programs (like PREP) and the mentors that cheered for me and helped me to understand the climate. Yes, I was smart, but when you come from places with almost no exposure to STEM careers, that’s just not enough.

We are in this odd climate where people are pretending no barriers exist to careers in science for some groups, but this conversation with 2 outstanding emerging scientists highlights that is just not true.

The daughter of an English professor and a teacher, Ms. Vincent received a master’s in public health while battling addiction. That year she helped start the North Carolina Survivors Union, among the first organizations in the country to offer safety rails for addicts who were struggling to quit.

Don't make me tap the sign

Large language models are slot machines that pay out in confidence, not information

If the information is bad (it often is) no one cares

But if the confidence was bad no one would use it 🤔

Luckily for the compulsive use companies want to promote, it's always confident

you don’t understand bro, if we didn’t lie, no one would buy our product 😩
Consider the implications if ChatGPT started saying "I don't know" to even 30% of queries
- a conservative estimate based on the paper's analysis of factual uncertainty in training data. Users accustomed to receiving confident answers to virtually any question would likely abandon such systems rapidly.

This! NIH staff are doing heroic work to help save the scientific enterprise. If you are a PI, drop them an email and say thank you! I did last week!

A huge shoutout to all the dedicated grants management specialists at the NIH who are working around the clock to push grants out before the Sep 30 deadline. And also to the POs responding to frantic emails.
Not an easy job under the best of circumstances and right now it's the pits.
Thank you!

Science is still suffering from the current chaos, but in tough times community matters even more. Had a blast at the @bcas-outreach.bsky.social retreat today. Super proud of lab members Sarah Mott and Mia Keller who crushed their posters/talk 🧠✨🧠✨

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.
