We are losing something by having newsrooms where everyone who has more than a few years’ experience has gotten fired. I don’t fault a young writer for not knowing about things that happened before she was born. But now there are no editors to help give context to these stories, either.

It's popular, I think, to be demure about one's own writing or to distance oneself from something well-written as if it popped into being fully formed and independent of our making it.

So before imposter syndrome returns: I have read it again, and I wrote the fuck out of this mermaid book, y'all.

My book was named one of Mary Sue’s 10 Best Sci Fi Audiobooks of all time! *cheers*

It appears I’m the only non-man and one of only two nonwhite people on the list. *boos*

The 10 Best Sci-Fi Audiobooks of All Time
Why read boring paper when you could listen to audio signals beamed into your brain via machine? Now THAT is sci-fi.

I need you guys to understand I have written/thought SO MUCH about the racialization of robots and even I am too bored to take most of this “clanker” discourse seriously.

You’re all wrong and you’re all right but social media doesn’t incentivize nuance enough to be the place for this discussion.

A friend of mine was on Charlie Kirk's "watch list" of Black professors. She received so many death and rape threats that her university offered her a security detail for the walk to class.

This is Kirk's legacy.

You would never know it from reading all of these legacy newspaper op-eds about him.

“Demagogue shot by radical” is in fact a pretty common life outcome for demagogues. The problem here isn’t that the accurate narrative is complicated or hard to comprehend but that it’s socially inconvenient and gets scary people to yell at you.

From an Atlantic editor.

I cannot get over how the entire centrist hivemind is attempting to wish into existence a person, and a movement, that does not exist. You are journalists, you are supposed to describe things as they are, not how you want them to be!
I don't think it's simpering praise. He was an interesting man. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he was interesting and he was growing, and his death is a significant loss for those who believe engagement can help bridge disagreements.

Let this be a lesson to anyone else who hasn’t read @delilahsdawson.bsky.social! House of Idyll is out now so you can rectify that!

After a not so great day, there’s nothing better than going to an event where I get a wtf peg? from @chuckwendig.bsky.social
because I admitted to never reading @delilahsdawson.bsky.social
before! But, I did read House of Idyll and it was in a word AMAZING! Such a great conversation!

Those Beyond the Wall by @micaiahjohnson.bsky.social should be required reading. Just, for everyone. It puts everything that happened and is happening in modern society in a mirror and screams at you to look into it.
"Spiritually, I'm an Ashtowner." That line and that chapter hit like a truck.

It’s all an attitude of being fine with authoritarianism, just not in their preferred cities. High crime rates in Republican-led states isn’t a gotcha! It’s a tragedy and a canary in a coal mine about what systemic racism and poverty beget. Do better, y’all. Not one city should be occupied.
theferocity.bsky.social
When I see people online, even in jest, suggest that people living in Republican-controlled states should be abandoned because of their politicians, I feel a deep heartache. New York CREATED Donald Trump and none of y’all are ever talk about it the way you disparage Alabama or Mississippi.

For long takes that are mostly about niche economics, I’ve liked a few by @unlearnecon.bsky.social (though I did watch his videos on mute at first after living in TN and haven’t yet forgiven him for being English and not some dude from Chattanooga)

OMG THANK YOU SO IS YOURS!!

It is wild having a *real* “keynote” when that’s usually just what my friends call the ensuing rant that happens when I’ve had half a gin & tonic and some unwitting victim mentions any aspect of American history/race/robots. But now there’s a MICROPHONE!

It has been so hard not talking about this, but I am so excited to be an invited speaker at @sirensconference.org. YOU GUYS THEY ARE GIVING ME A WHOLE KEYNOTE TALK I WILL NEVER SHUT UP AGAIN!

i find it really telling all the people agreeing with this are men and meanwhile i've read more wide-ranging sci-fi pubbed by non-cis men / marketed as sci-fi in the last 5-6 years than ever? (Rivers Solomon, Alix Harrow, Micaiah Johnson, Mir Lafferty, Yoon Ha Lee, SB Divya, Bethany Jacobs, et al)

Science fiction – printed, published science fiction, and sci-fi as a distinct publishing category – is dying. I think it's obvious at this point. It's not dead yet, and who knows, maybe a miraculous intervention could save the patient. But…
