To stand at the edge of the wood is an intoxication. As a witch I feel it as a rush of green communion, a wave of possibility roaring towards me. You feel it touching you psychic skin, somewhere between the tease of a lover and warning of scratches to come. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982 #WitchSky

Tomorrow is January 6th, the day of the world-famous Haxey Hood festival, a bizarre (and possibly very very old) tradition from the Isle of Axholme!

Also tomorrow, at around 12:15pm, I will be talking about this very festival on BBC radio Humberside!

I recommend checking out Sister Irene O'Connor's album, by the way. Recorded DIY-style in 1973 and produced by fellow Australian nun Sister Marimil Lobregat, it's been just been reissued for the first time in decades. Sounds weirdly like Yoko Ono in places.

A folktale from Weert tells of a man who saw a cat sitting on a tree stump. He didn't have anything better to do than chase the cat away. The cat returned and said, 'Chase me away again...if you dare.'

The man fled home. Terrified.

Big Bellied Oak sits on the side of the road passing through Savernake Forest, Wiltshire. It has been there for around 1000 years, since the time of William the Conqueror.
Run around it 7 times at midnight and you will summon the Devil. 👹And watch out for ghostly monks that sit beneath the tree. 🌳
