Spooky Advent day 8: a vengeful ghost may or may not wreak havok in 1930s Svalbard. Yes, it's Michelle Paver's novel Dark Matter, a story of a young man's terrifying descent into madness in one of the most bleak and isolated places on Earth

An excellent overview of Krampus and similar figures, and earlier this year he published a follow-up book about Carnival figures that I really ought to get hold of too.

I learnt yesterday that Krampus enjoy stealing hats. It is a well established mari tradition as well!
expect hat stealing shenannigans in the future
I was told yesterday that Little Mari and Little Krampus would be a match heaven. So here they are. Little Mari showing a bouncy Little Krampus her Krampus Bread

A detail from Levi Walter Yaggy's chromolithographic 1887 chart, Physical Geography: a classic mid-century Iguanodon dominates the 'Pre-Adamite' Mesozoic, dwarfing the timid-looking bipedal dinosaur half-heartedly added above. Whole image viewable on the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection.

Serious wow! Just when you thought the artefacts from the 70s occult revival couldn't get any weirder.
From the latest Midian Books mailer: The Avalon Hill Witchcraft Ritual Kit (1974). "A boxed set of materials and guide books for performing witchcraft rituals....seems to be a hybrid of role-play and 'genuine' Wicca. Needless to say extremely scarce."

Nature surprises
I went for a walk along the River Arun today and when I left the main path discovered what felt like a patch of Atlantic tropical rainforest like you'd be more likely to find on Dartmoor with all the epiphytic mosses and ferns.

Day 8 of the #HooklandChristmasTree decoration and the glass Ghost Bear finds a place. A semi-opaque spectre, he reflects silver tinsel, white fairy lights while haunting the branches. All the other ornaments seem to keep a respectful distance away, almost as if they can hear his roar for revenge.
