I'm still not great with doing it for books but find it easier to abandon TV series.

"There is no ghost there at all; but the worst of all the things that haunt poor mortal man, and that is, in all its nakedness - FEAR! Fear that deafens and darkens and overwhelms. It followed me through the corridor, it fought against me in the room..."
- H G Wells, 'The Red Room'
#PhantomsFriday
Illustration by Lawrence Scarfe. A man runs across a corridor to a flight of stairs, looking back over his shoulder in terror.

Well, it's official. After our paper last year (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....), the Slender-billed Curlew is officially declared Extinct today.

Scientists dream of describing new species, not writing their obituary and epitaph, knowing that they are gone forever #ornithology

...and King Under Sea, because. All Hookland art is a seen out of the corner of the mind's eye thing with rare (one, actually) exceptions. They could look like many things. They looked like this to me in that instant.
Stern male figure underwater with a crown of driftwood and seaweed with a baleful stare.

If you read the link I posted they say some people see three figures, so even more for you to decipher.

Urgh, waking up stories like that get to me the most. When I was young and read about sleep paralysis that freaked me out so much I trained myself to sleep on my back to lessen the chance of getting it. Touch wood so far I've never experienced it.

Lucky, the charity shops round me very rarely have much of interest.

They’re just so good, little bit dada, little bit pop, all creep and spook, divine
A book page with a collage of black and white painted bats surrounding a black and white photo of two smartly dressed white men, against a purple painted background A book page with a collage of black and white painted witches with skulls for faces and a photo of a clown in harlequin costume, against a spattering purple painted background

Every single one of the illustrations is a brilliant brooding exercise in evoking dread & doom.
I’d never seen his art before I picked up this book, but after an Earl E. Mayan internet odyssey I’m completely smitten
A collage painting with black and white cut out photos of human faces and a snarling Alsatian dog surrounding a white painted sheet ghost, all against a black and purple background made of paint drips suggesting a spooky wood, above which door shapes are scratched in black ink A collage painting in which a phot of two white men, one standing wearing a cowboy hat and crumpled shirt and trousers, the other squatting wearing preppy clothes and a sailor hat, are surrounded by an ominous purple painted background, above them a black and white painted skull, to their left a black white and grey painted area which is fairly abstract but suggests tv static intermixed with shadowy branches

There are certain moments of childhood which refuse to lose their strangeness. Like that morning you woke to knocked down trees on the common – despite the night being stormless. An overpowering sense that some giant walking the land had casually uprooted them. – Joanna Vickers #VOH

A #Victorian engraving of a Brocken Witch, one of a whole coven which #legend stated held their revels on the peak of the same name in the Hartz Mountains of #Germany.

A cheerful witch rides past the moon on a broomstick. She has batlike wings and is carrying a cauldron, out of which peeps an impish figure. Bats are joining her in her flight.

The Nachtkrapp is the Night Raven, found in Germany and beyond, a massive bird of the night who in most regions have malevolent intent. If it sees small children it will flap its iron wings and take the child back to its nest and make a messy meal of them #FolkyFriday

"He went completely and violently insane to the accompaniment of screams ... bloodcurdling and terrible." This happened in a bedroom in a modest, newly built house in Sussex. Another man who'd tried to sleep in the room said: "I got the impression of a ghastly cat thing in there."

This reminds me of the Martello tower ghost at the now ruined Derby jail..{the new model prison not the old gaol on Friargate}.. a world war one deserter..{just a youth} had been executed by firing squad there.. his spirit still walks up the winding stair to this very day.. as a cold mass of air..

Things like that are lways better when you only get hints and your imagination fills in the gaps, but they kept throwing more in. What happened to the bees for instance? (Not the bees!)

According to legend, Sennen Cove was haunted by a mysterious fog which could suddenly descend on clear days, accompanied by a strange whooping sound. Locals referred to this phenomenon as the ‘Whooper’ and believed it to be a warning not to put to sea due to an impending storm…
