Forty years ago today was my first day at the Los Angeles Daily News. I had two bylines for the next day's paper and my sports editor, Steve Clow, took me to lunch at La Frite on Ventura Blvd. I worked there -- as a reporter, critic and columnist -- until 1996, when I left for the Chicago Sun-Times.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but any govt official who violates someone's constitutional rights -- and is acting outside the scope of their lawful authority -- can be PERSONALLY liable in a civil suit.
