Spent some time with Corita yesterday—
Typewritten class directives recorded by a student who took a course with artist Corita Kent in the 1960s at Immaculate Heart:

"Keep a journal—fill it with everything you come in contact with—be very aware—of shapes, everything, because letters are shapes."

"Make a list of 100 signs you read today. Look and jot down the message that it gives you."

From the Papers of Corita, Schlesinger Library, Harvard Radcliffe Institute

I feel like this photo of masked, armed men pepper spraying a pastor protecting his community is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time.

This current administration is the greatest threat to academic freedom & sci. research since the ebb of McCarthyism. And this compact is just more evidence that it wants to dictate what we teach, what we research, what drugs we develop, & how we express ourselves."

I think the myth of objectivity is what allows people to believe that GAI can output a meaningful summary.

Prior knowledge doesn't matter, context doesn't matter, relationships don't matter, so a summary written in a particular 'style' is fine.

Explain your username:

Mimosa is my real name. The "is here" is a pun and plays with the idea of being _on here_ but also, not quite here because what's happening in real-time is not quite interwebs' time.

(this was back when IRL vs. "on the Internet" was a necessary distinction)

Explain your username:

My last name is Noe. My first name is Matthew.

People have made weird jokes about "Noe" (some haha cringe, some rude and bullying) my entire life.

I thought it was an amusing way to reclaim some of that back in 2008. And despite me not loving "Matt" it is pithier 🤷‍♂️

Explain your username:

It's a line from Parks & Rec one of my fave shows. In that show, Leslie has an ongoing cold war with librarians. She calls them punk-ass book jockeys as she overturned a book cart and flees. I'm a librarian who is punk in spirit if not attire, so, yeah.

NPR could easily fill a desperately needed public service for trustworthy legacy media, and likely easily meet its own small dollar fundraising goals after having its federal funding pulled, by simply describing things as they are. But instead they choose to do whatever this is.

I guess I shouldn't be *surprised* but it is making my head spin that the feds have shot two people, with live rounds, killing one of them, in Chicagoland in recent weeks, and in both cases they were very clearly found to be lying about what happened, and essentially nothing is happening about it.

happy sunday, remember that you are completely expendable to your employer and that when you die they will forget you ever existed within weeks and easily replace you

This just activated every research librarian everywhere.

Microfiche, microfilm, and microcards ... each needing a different reader. Fun times!

Also reminded of when the young librarian translating my talk into Chinese stopped me and said, "I don't know that word."

Reader, the word was CD-ROM.

I have been trying to explain a microfiche machine to one of my dear, brilliant, talented, but clearly too young to be alive collaborators. And it is taking the last of my soul.

“Micro…fish?? I have never heard that word in my life.” I recorded the timestamp so it can be put on my tombstone.

And to think that my very first job in libraries was to teach patrons how to load microfiche cartridges into a viewer to see scanned collection materials!

Fiche. Fish. So many multitudes. So much squinting.

If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.

The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

I'm furious on behalf of everyone who was brutalized by ICE today in Chicago. My GOD, this is completely horrible.

I've been in meetings most of today and I just checked messages and see that comrades & friends were part of the people they brutalized today.

💙 I experienced something similar before.

It makes a world of difference when you find an environment where you are supported and find like-minded colleagues willing to collaborate.

You will shine again when you are given the space and latitude to do so.
