Lower Decks’ win is the first time in 30 years that a Star Trek story has won a Hugo Award.

The last one was “All Good Things” in 1995.

it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

OK. My quick attempt at "My Omelas, Right Or Wrong."

1/X

Let me tell you about this incredible place, Omelas. It’s huge, folks, absolutely beautiful. Everybody’s happy. Everybody’s winning. The economy, it's fantastic, the best economy anyone’s ever seen, believe me.

Any medium can be art, but the more we refer to something as "content" or "product" the further we get away from that.

Interracial marriage did not cross 50% approval in the US until 1996, when I was 30 years old. Good political messaging drives opinion, it doesn't follow it.

Why is our entire political class constantly telling us to put truth and morality aside to focus on optics
That was a very effective speech.

You can hate it or him.

But that speech was aimed squarely at issues where the public is with Trump -- and filled with made-for-sharing moments.

A master image-maker at work (and you can hate him and acknowledge that's true!)

THIS. I keep seeing artists in promo mode go "I guess I gotta do a capitalism."

No. Capitalism is not the same as currency, it is a specific socioeconomic system that is harmful to all life on this planet. Currency is representative of value for the exchange of goods and services.
Some people need to learn the difference between engaging in commerce and capitalism.

Also need to read a book, any book, about class structure in the contemporary Western world. I beg.

Let’s talk about resistance after a conqueror takes power. Specifically let’s talk about this bendy yellow building, and what it shows us about the moment the Florentine Republic finally fell to its kleptocratic/proto-capitalist banking-fortune Medici conquerors 1/?

I think this nails it. I’ve struggled with this before; Bradley, Card, Rowling, now Gaiman. It makes sense, they create characters, including their public persona. Take the art as you find it. I do feel compelled not to help artists who prove problematic, but I’m trying not to let it erase past joy.
There are a number of people in Hollywood where I have said the following about them for years: Their most successful fictional narrative is the story of who they are. Which is not who they are. It’s the *story* they’ve put out there and most people are convinced by it.

Love art. But no pedestals.
My husband just helped me understand how awful people who create good art:

"Neil Gaiman is a character created by Neil Gaiman."

His public personna was convincing. He might have thought it would be labeled non-fiction forever. His art and his facade contain good characters. But he isn't one.
