If top marginal tax rates had stayed in the 90+ zone absolutely none of this would have happened

Well worth reading. Alice’s writing was formative to my understanding of my place in the world as a disabled person, and my worth in the world as a disabled person.

I’m home alone and chilling happily. I am not doing any kind of traditional big spread Thanksgiving meal for just me.

What should I bake tomorrow? (These are all roughly energy-equivalent.)

🥚 Felix’s six-egg brownies
🍎 Smitten kitchen apple cake
🌰 Pecan pie
🥧 Something else you will suggest

Fabulous thread.
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

Anyone watching #ChosenHome on Netflix? Sweet little Japanese age gap gay romcom with found family that also works in conversations about coming out, being closeted, homophobia, marriage equality, adopting as a gay couple, and general life experience as a gay man in Japan etc #ぼくたちん家#BokutachinChi

I imagine most of the people trying to claim that stealing indie ebooks is leftism simply have never had to worry about paying rent or for groceries but sorry, your desire for free luxury goods is outweighed by the material needs of their creators

We know that, for a ton of reasons, a lot of folks don't have as much to spend as they'd like this holiday season. Sooooooo, here's a thread of things you can do that will support your local indie bookstore or other business WITHOUT spending any more than you intended...

Also not everyone has a home in which to receive deliveries and grocery stores do in fact serve people without homes. And grocery store delis all have fresh meals with veggies that can be bought with SNAP. Also you can go to them on work lunches and they're cheaper than fast food.
And why should someone have to bear the cost of food delivery? Or be restricted to Walmart? And how did this become specifically about Atlanta? So many goal posts.

Anyway delivery is not an adequate replacement for a physical store in accessible proximity of where one lives.
Walmart+ costs $13/mo and gives free delivery on orders over $35.

You can get fresh produce in any 'food desert' near-ish to a Walmart, which includes all of Atlanta.

To be sure, there can be (and are!) bad actors in bad faith using A.I. for bad, impure purposes. No disagreement there. But your anti-A.I. stance does not justify or excuse the decision to deliberately misuse something that is intended to help disabled people. Abusing alt text will have real harm.
Some are suggesting you deliberately write inaccurate or confusing alt text, because they say this confuses AI scrapers that are analyzing images.

The purpose of alt text is to help people who cannot see the image. Deliberately misrepresenting the image is a gross misuse of alt text. Don't do it.

In other words, alt text and the alt attribute predate the slog of A.I. technology. Alt text predates every single social media platform. Alt text has been a standard and best practice for quite a while. Insinuating alt text is just a tool for A.I. scraping is ignorant of history and accessibility.

Whatever your feelings are on artificial intelligence, A.I. has nothing to do with the purpose of the alt attribute or alt text. To suggest that people deliberately write misleading alt text in order to "stick it to A.I." is going to hurt the humans who rely on it to access the web.

My only currently active WIP is a SKZ fae!AU based on the first set of DO IT concept photos.
I’m brainstorming on it with a friend, and it’s not in any state for snippet sharing yet, so just like…trust me when I tell you it’s making us more than slightly feral, I guess?

And doctors are still paid as the result of daily LABOR.

They're WORKERS.

They're rich. But they're not The Rich.

This is not a high hurdle to get over, but I see people fall over it every day.

If you're equating doctors with Elon Musk, you are 100% not ready to be having these conversations.
doctor who makes 200K annual is VERY comfortable. That’s not wealth hoarding though lol

It’s Facebook and Amazon paying no taxes for the last decade, its being allowed to take out loans on unrealized gains in the hundreds of millions, capital gains tax lower than the tax rate of ppl who make 55k

For at least a year, I've been returning to the question, how would you know when it's time to leave the US? For this piece, I asked trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer Americans who, with their families and partners, have recently fled the country, about how they made this decision and how they left.
When Is It Time to Flee?
Trans people and their families are facing hard questions and choices as threats to their safety and rights proliferate.

Writing about people donating trash is — and I kid you not — the only thing (so far) to almost get me fired. White people were LIVID. And organized to get my university fired for it.

This is the holy grail of whiteness, patriarchy, and capitalism in some surprising ways.

Bless that prof!
I had a womens studies professor try to coax a class to understand that it’s not ’wrong’ for an alcoholic homeless person to take your change you tossed and spend it on alcohol. People were livid lol. It really changed my perspective on giving. its freeing to give without expectation.
