![When the character who plays’ Koko’s roommate, Joy, a dark-skinned Black woman, explains to her hat she cannot “earn blackness” because she “can stay on tune,” or “hit us with a couple of Black facts,” she responded defensively, saying that while she’s not Black, her family is, claiming she doesn’t “have to study black culture, cause [she] lived it.” But, being Black is more than having Black family members, growing up in a mostly black community, or even picking up the lingo, fashion, or recipes. While likely unintentional, Southern Fried Rice seems to trivialize the experience of Black people by pushing those characters to the back. Discourse about the show reveals that Black audiences are craving meaningful representation and are no longer satisfied with a role in the background. If those in the film industry are genuinely interested in capturing the attention of Black audiences, they’ll listen to the criticism, rather than brush it aside. One student who attends a HBCU said they, “are tired of non-black people centering themselves in our spaces while our voices are ignored.”
Since the show portrays a Black woman as the villain for sharing reservations about the exploitation of black culture, the creators shouldn’t be surprised by the backlash. But they did seem blindsided by it.
