Today in Cars Ruin Everything:

The Humboldt Park boathouse parking lot was actually designed as a “music court” for outdoor performances, and was used as such until the Parks Department began reconfiguring park space to accommodate the automobile in the late 1920s and 30s.

Getting really close to a million Divvy rides a month.

Imagine what it would look and feel like if there were a connected grid of streets so safe to bike on that even new/inexperienced/timid/tourist riders felt completely comfortable jumping on a Divvy.... 2 mil a month? 3 million?

September was a huge month for Chicago's Divvy bikeshare system! A few highlights & pics of some great new stations:

✅ Installed 28 new docking stations across the city
✅ 900,000 total rides, shattering September records
✅ 475,000 ride taken on e-bikes
Counter clockwise starting from Left:
1. Divvy station on street between bike lane and travel lane Washington/Wabash in the Loop
2. Divvy station on street AND sidewalk at Sheffield/Addison outside of Wrigley Field greatly expanded
3. Divvy station on sidewalk Halsted/Fulton right outside of the entry Fulton Market
4. A new "angled" Divvy station in Bucktown that preserves more sidewalk space by being angled at 45 degrees

What's a School Street you ask?

And then you ask, why aren't all transportation decision-makers choosing to build more streets for children?

Love the angled option!

I would love these along the California, Fullerton, Logan and every other traffic clogged street along the Kennedy.

Take the Blue Line... it's right there!

Fairmount Park is one Philadelphia's most underused assets, because it's not designed to be safe or usable as a park.

Since 2019 41 people have been killed by crashes in the park.

Saw the Logan and Rockwell one going in this week, awesome! Prior closest one to St. John Berchmans was across Fullerton which stinks to cross as a pedestrian. This is great!

Two new Divvy stations were just installed in Logan Square!
📍 Milwaukee Ave & Armitage Ave
📍 Rockwell Ave & Logan Blvd
These stations fill gaps in the network - giving more riders more parking options and reducing out-of-station parking.

Heartbreaking story from this morning. A 9 year old hit & killed while crossing the street in front of their CPS school by another parent.

Will never stop fighting for *citywide* safe streets infrastructure around schools in Chicago. These kids deserve better!

I’ve mentioned it before but it’s happened again: a very large percentage of our child-related travel is medium-distance trips that don’t line up well with transit (so it’s barely faster than walking) but biking is literally as fast as driving.

Bike-friendly cities are family-friendly cities!
