Been a hot minute since I've shared a garden update here; our schedules have been maxed out & we've been riding that ragged edge of total burnout. Thankfully the cool crisp Autumn air has finally arrived, & we're staying busy with fall chores. & October is one of my absolute favorite things 🍁🍂

Marigolds still bloom, and green bean plants hang on even though some leaves are brown & wilted from the first frost. On this morning's chore list was black raspberry picking. Most made it to the farm stand, several were taste-tested for quality control, and others were accidentally smashed in the process. Worth it! 🌱

Pulled the first 5 humongo cabbages of the season today, then got right to work channeling my Polish ancestors & making the pure magick that is homemade sauerkraut. 11 jars of the goooood stuff, now fermenting happily in the cellar!

On a patch of green grass sit 5 giant heads of green cabbage, freshly pulled from the garden beds, each with huge green outer leaves. A bamboo cutting board has a chef's knife with a black handle sitting on it, with a few flecks of green cabbage shreds on the blade. Behind the knife is a small pile of shredded green cabbage, surrounded by larger chunks of the cabbage head that are waiting to be sliced. Several pint-sized wide mouth glass Ball canning jars sit on a cream, gray & black flecked granite countertop. The jars are 3/4 full of the shredded cabbage & salt blend of a sauerkraut recipe. The cabbage is weighed down with glass weights, and the jars have brightly-colored (pink, green, blue, or yellow) silicone "burp" lids that allow the fermenting cabbage to off-gas.

My day job is a fully remote position, and I am just such a huge fan of the WFH life. Getting to relocate to my patio to work and listen to the birds sing and chickens ba-gock, does wonders for my mood while cranking out reports.

A brown dragonfly with a bright yellow stripe running down the side of its body rests on a branch of an apple tree. Its wings are all splayed out and are almost perfectly clear, except for a few large brown blotches at the tips, in the middle, and next to the body. A big, plump Swallowtail caterpillar munches happily on a carrot leaf. It blends into the carrot greenery very well, being green with black stripes & small yellow dots. A tiny bird's nest, no bigger than 2 inches across, made from delicate little pieces of brown grass, sits nestled into the crotch of a few branches in an apple tree. It is well hidden by the green leaves of the apple tree. A Variegated Fritilliary Caterpillar munches on the green leaf of a downy yellow violet plant. The caterpillar has orange and white stripes running down the length of its body, and has black spikes protruding down the entire length of its body.

Mars is portrayed as this starry-eyed tale of colonization because the US space industry is self-interested in getting limitless funding.

It doesn't take much critical thought to see how safeguarding a planet that already supports life is far easier than building life out of a dead one.

The rain persists, but so do we 🌧

I'll take the liquid sunshine, as we're creeping ever closer to making up for last year's severe drought. Plus, i think there's something just quietly magical happening in the gardens amidst the droplets
