#Cosmos in my #garden. The #summer heat & humidity returned to southeast #Texas this week (high today is 96F (35.5C)). That always takes a toll on many of my outdoor plants, no matter how much I water, so this is probably the garden at its peak.

Black-banded Wasp Moth (Syntomeida melanthus), Brewster County, Texas.

A wasp-mimic moth. The moth has black wings and body with blue iridescence. The wings have broad whitish blotches and the body has thin yellow stripes.

I had been trying to figure out what this infestation on Jackson in Whitman might be for a while now. I realized today that it is Bracted Verbena (Verbena bracteata). I'm not used to it looking so healthy & bushy.

Really like this for my garden too. I put it in and completely ignore it and it comes up every year like clockwork. And unlike my scarlet sage, it doesn't try to take over the beds.

It’s a native perennial and honestly one of the easiest plants to grow. I never water it, and it still blooms nearly year-round here in SE Texas. The butterflies, bees, and other pollinators can't get enough of it.
