NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated.

The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

As an analyst, I criticize President Zelensky for mistakes, predict outcomes, and so on. However, he is honest in expressing the will of the people in foreign policy. He articulates what Ukrainians are trying to say, and in that respect, he is a true democratic leader.

No point engaging in further rhetoric. The truth of the matter is now plain to see. America has sided with Russia and against Ukraine. It is on the side of tyranny. The fundamental questions from this point out are practical, not political.

Three years later and they still understand nothing about Ukranians.
“I just don’t understand how Zelensky walked into the trap,” said the diplomat, noting Zelensky’s long-winded remarks that triggered the argument. “Your life literally depends on this man. If he starts throwing custard pies at you, you let him.” www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Contentious Trump-Zelensky meeting threatens U.S. support for Ukraine
The Ukrainian leader came to Washington to prevent Trump from abandoning Kyiv in favor of Moscow three years into Russia’s war on his country but was met with vocal anger from the American president.

I don’t know how he does it.

Heroic is a strange word. But I think it can be applied here.
Zelenskyy on if Ukraine can hold off Russia without continued US support: "It will be difficult for us. That's why I'm here."

Zelensky taking a hard line right now is EXACTLY what the world needs.

Call out their lies, hold them accountable, speak in simple terms, and hold strong.
Zelenskyy: "When they, for example say that Ukraine is almost destroyed, that our soldiers run away, that they are not heroes, that the president is a dictator, what is the reaction? It's not about me. The reaction is, where is the friendship between Ukraine and the US?"

It's grim, but we're a rich continent with big strengths, and defending Ukraine and the rest of us against ageing, corrupt, sclerotic Russia is essential and eminently doable.

“We must ensure that America also sees us as essential. For that to happen, America’s focus must shift to Europe. So that one day, in Washington, they’ll say – all eyes on Europe. And not because of war. But because of the opportunities in Europe.”

Not to be dramatic, but there really are days when I feel scared of the future.
Like, to pick an example at random, today.
What we are witnessing is an assault on the very concept of truth.
The armed conflicts we see unfolding all over the world will be accompanied by turmoil &doubt in our heads.

When the war in Ukraine started, I confessed to a friend how I couldn't stomach others indifference. Then she reminded me abt Syria 💔, that she cared deeply abt, and that people didn't even talk abt it anymore. We imagined one day we would be happy together for both of them. 1/2

Something about the fact that each one of these drones must be guided by a human operator (for now), makes this feel more abhorrent than simply shelling the city and killing people largely at random.
New: Kherson’s civilians have been the target of an experiment without precedent in modern European warfare: a concerted Russian campaign to empty a city by stalking its residents with attack drones. Story w/ @samjoiner.bsky.social @inari-ta.bsky.social + @cen4infores.bsky.social

It is a privilege to be in Kyiv alongside @eucopresident.bsky.social Costa and Commissioner Kos.

In my first visit since taking up office, my message is clear: the European Union wants Ukraine to win this war.

We will do whatever it takes for that.

Whether or not you believe Russia will start a "nuclear war" over a few Western supplied Ukrainian missiles hitting targets in Russia (as Western missiles repeatedly struck targets inside Crimea, which Russia believes is Russian territory, and Russia did nothing) is tantamount to an IQ test.
