An hour later, we learned that Disney did the right thing and is bringing Kimmel back. This is great news, BUT this is bigger than one show and one person. We must all stand up to protect free speech. We cannot allow the threats to go unanswered. We must continue to demand congressional oversight.

I've been fired from the Washington Post in the aftermath of the Charlie Kirk shooting.

w my Ss I discuss predispositions and filter bubbles
This is A+ example. We don't know everyone's backgrounds or how they've shaped their filter bubbles, but we DO know that living inside these bubbles & rejecting things that provoke us is dangerous We fail to learn the whole picture
This may explain why there’s an aggressive response to people who merely post Kirk’s own words. It threatens the existence of the alternate Kirk - the motivational speaker that had been marketed to young kids and white Christian groups through selective quotation & clips.

Agree. Info comes in heaps everyday but when a largescale event (or 2 or 3) happen in one day the bombardment is overwhelming. Teaching my HS: Lean into actual jouranlists covering stories; lean into foreign news outlets who come w different perspective Stay away from provocation...that's not news
I would like to think I am media literate.

I teach media literacy.

I am having a very difficult time digesting fact from fiction in today's news. It all feels so overwhelming.

Imagine now being a kid (learner).

THIS is why we need more certified school librarians.

Agree, no librarian would actively work to ban books. Maybe Lori the liar? Lori the litigious? Spreader of fake news and hate?
Read this. ‼️😳 Lori is not a librarian by the way. Animating one doesn’t make it so.
Who is Lori the Librarian, new idol of the book banners? She's a superhero who defaces little free libraries and "takes down" librarians and educators.

But *what* is she? A PragerU-like animation by a couple who have been campaigning against DEI for years.

Trying to "align" the Smithsonian w/DJT's preferences is part of an attack on knowledge

Universities
The Park Service
The Nat'l Endowment for the Humanities
PBS & CPB
& more.

Why the attack?
Knowledge is power
It empowers people

And empowerment & independent thought are NOT authoritarian friendly

Parents, be vigilant against PragerU instructional materials in your kids classrooms! It’s an extremist outfit masquerading as an educational nonprofit. It’s a far right wing response to PBS kid’s programming, it is propaganda designed to appeal to children and careless or bigoted educators. Beware!

New in PN: The slide toward "competitive authoritarianism"

I agree, but I'd clarify that "It's history's job IN A FREE, DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY, W FREE SPEECH & PRESS...BC THEY AREN'T INTIMIDATED BY AN AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENT" (sorry to yell) (& I also don't pretend that we've always (ever?) done well doing such, but we've had the ability to grow & do better)
You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.
