"AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more."

This piece on AI by Cory Doctorow is spectactular.

In order to establish a compromise solution that pleases no one, I propose that the United States implement metric imperial units. Instead of a mile, we will use kiloyards. Instead of ounces, centipounds. And so on.

This guide was created by a group of researchers who study consciousness and the possibility that AIs could one day become conscious.

We put this together because many of us have been contacted"

Louder for the people in back, please!
It absolutely makes sense that men are using AI more and seeing more job benefits, because confidently spouting nonsense in the shape of information (what LLMs are programmed to do) has always been much more of a pathway for career advancement for men than for others.
Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."

Every once in a while I think about how the best paid jobs are usually the least helpful or most actively harmful to society (medicine being the one big exception), while the worst paid ones are the most helpful to society. Then I stare out the window for a while

Every time I read some suggestion for how I can use an LLM, it falls into one four categories:

- Something I don’t want to do
- Something an LLM can’t do
- Something that would be easier, better, or more enjoyable if I did it myself
- Something I don’t want *anyone* to do under any circumstances

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this:

Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius.
If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

If you had #superpowers, would you use them for good or evil?

In our world, for all intents and purposes, wealth gives you power - and superwealth gives you superpowers.

And, from what we can see, humans tend to use superpowers in the worst ways possible.

Typical range is from selfish to monster.

BREAKING: A federal judge has issued a restraining order against Kari Lake and the Trump administration barring the cancelation of funding for Radio Free Europe.

The decision to terminate, the judge says, appears to violate the law/congressional intent.

can't we abandon all the [random messenger] channels, social pages, profiles, and everything else we try to use to communicate things to the audience and replace them with RSS and just be done with this constantly moving noise
