I’m horrified by Trump’s order to send 300 National Guard troops to Chicago. We’re only nine months into a four year term and already the president is trying to invade an American city. If you’re in the Guard, you can and should refuse these orders.

A university is a self-governing community of scholars. This is its essence, grounded in both the concept and the millenarian experience of the institution. States can found, sponsor, and fund a university, but if they want to govern it, they will fail because it won't be a university anymore.

The prof in full tweed in the middle of New York City or Chicago was for many decades the norm, but country/ city rules would dictate otherwise.

I don't think the same rules applied in continental universities, where the style was more black-turtleneck urban and less tweedy.

On the subject of rus in urbe, I may have missed a post on this, but what was the reason for Anglosphere academics to adopt country dress—tweed, flatcaps, brogues—as a uniform, as opposed to city dress? It doesn't seem obvious to me, as academics lean urban in temperament and Oxbridge isn't rural.

UCLA’s funds reinstated after yesterday’s court order! Thanks to the brave researchers and their amazing counsel, including Dean Chemerinsky, who brought suit. This is just another turn in the ongoing fight, but a great result for now.
