The origin of ‘cake’ is actually dense bread. Egyptians added honey, but what we make today derives a lot from the 18th century Genoa ‘sponge.’ Professor Nicola Humble writes that, given its permutations and symbolism, “cake is an idea.” Hard to eat one of those. Maybe… nothing is cake?
