It's hard even to comprehend how stupid this has become

Every American should pull every bowling trophy and participation medal out of the closet and send it to this loser.
unspeakably pathetic stuff from Trump here as he says he'd be honored to accept María Corina Machado's Nobel Prize if she wants to give it up to him

When asked why he needed to possess the territory, he said: “Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success"

Well yeah, because most of us are the Melians who are going to be wiped out along the way to Athenian collapse.
People who fancy quoting the Melian Dialogue ("the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must") ignore the fact that Thucydides was clearly portraying this as the kind of hubris that squandered Athens' primacy and paved the way for a devastating peer war that it ultimately lost.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if Donald Trump were to attack the Danish island of Greenland that would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

The closest analogy I can make to what's happening in Venezuela right now is when a larger, more powerful drug cartel decapitates the leadership of one of its smaller, weaker rivals and then continues to do business with whatever is left. That is what is happening now, not liberation for the people.

I’ll never tell (it was luck).
Anyone advocating regime change in Venezuela is implicitly advocating for a long, bloody, expensive commitment—whether they acknowledge it or not. ICYMI @markhertling.bsky.social:
What ‘Regime Change’ in Venezuela Would Really Mean
It’s not clear the administration has settled on a goal, much less considered the consequences.

Those wanting “strong statements” about the rule of law and international relations, reflect on how helpful those have been to the people of Ukraine. Useless. Russia bombs Ukrainian civilians daily and nobody bothers to say anything anymore. Canada and Europe’s actions matter more here. #cdnpoli

The rules-based order is over. International law is dead. The institutions set up to keep the peace after WWII are powerless.

The US is now a global threat. The President has said it’s in the business of taking over any country it sees fit.

Ok but what happens next in Venezuela.

Like, is the US just going to black-bag the president and then let the rest of the Venezuelans figure out what to do next?

Or does the Trump have some plans for how to install a puppet regime to get the oil? Does that require troops on the ground?
