For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Don’t ever tell me to support the troops again. They’re “defending our freedoms” and somehow are nowhere to be found when the cops and Gestapo are disappearing people because the CO didn’t give them permission to protect civilians. I’m sick to death of it.

Show up, create chaos, scare the shit out of the citizens, and when one freaks out and tries to run, shoot her. The death penalty for disobeying ICE.
Then, when you go to court, lie about how "in danger" you felt.
Didn't we just claim we rescued Venezuela from a dictator attacking his own citizens?

losing my mind at the "she should have followed directions" people

really? really? you're cool with "if you don't follow directions, they get to kill you"? that seems like a good state of affairs to you? that seems like how law enforcement ought to work: instant obeisance or death?

Apparently Americans need to be reminded yet again that we have never suspended elections during a war. Lincoln was reelected during the Civil War (a large part of why we have absentee voting), FDR during WW2. It's never been true, and scaring folks with untrue things makes you not a good person.

In all these cases, it's his own insecurity that's driving it.
Why does Trump want Greenland? “National security.”

Why should Trump’s ballroom vanity project proceed? “National security.”

Why is Trump killing the wind energy industry? “National security.”

Why does Trump hate the New York Times? “National security.”

The pattern is ... not subtle.
For the White House, ‘national security’ is becoming the answer to every question
Donald Trump and his team have a go-to tactic intended to shut down debate over their goals. It's not working.

Donald Trump has unilaterally decided that one of America's largest media companies must be sold to one of his cronies. Here's why America has a liberal media bias problem.

ICE is snatching up American citizens with ID and throwing them in jail for days at a time without any form of due process. But someone with pink hair did a land acknowledgment at my last HOA meeting. I have never felt more politically homeless.

An easy way to explain luddites:

Textile manufacturers brought in machines that could do in an hour what would have taken 12 hours by hand.

And then, tried to keep paying the now 12x more productive workers the same wages as before.

That's it, that was the problem luddites had. Not complex.

I'm so far away from my emotions. Every finger press n flick brings horrors and rage so large, I have to do relaxation rituals on myself. I have to lose touch with myself and emotions. There's just no way to survive. Read a book? Horrors and rage in them. Walk outside? I like that...

Far more dangerous than Trump, I think, is how quickly the last eight months have pulled back the curtain on America's elites and shown everyone how venal, how cowardly and how utterly mediocre the foundation of our society has been.

Rather than offering a real alternative to the status quo, this crop of candidates is repackaging the boring, moderate politics of the Democratic establishment with inauthentic videos and forced rhetoric.
