Frank Burns energy
When you draw a platoon leader like Hegseth, it’s your worst nightmare. You just ride it out until he’s gone and gets replaced by someone who isn’t a complete jackass. Only a fool like Trump would put one of them in charge of the entire defense department.

The independent newsroom @19thnews.org reports that according to public health experts, decades of progress in HIV treatment and prevention in the United States is being derailed by funding cuts and threats to key federal programs—and without reversing course, the damage will be devastating. #HIVsky
America’s most basic HIV protections are in danger as a decade of progress unravels
Health experts are alarmed as Republicans degrade the country’s pivotal HIV programs — and break promises made during Trump’s first term.

Here's the Guardian's obituary for the late Udo Kier, who I first remember seeing with his scene-stealing performance in My Own Private Idaho. I love this quote:

"Of his prolific career, he once said, '100 movies are bad, 50 movies you can see with a glass of wine and 50 movies are good.'"
Udo Kier, German actor who starred in 200 films spanning Lars von Trier to Ace Ventura, dies aged 81
Actor who appeared in My Own Private Idaho, Blade, Armageddon and Dogville, as well as Madonna music videos and video games, died on Sunday

So sad to learn that Udo Kier has passed away, and yes, he was magnificent in Swan Song. If you haven't seen it yet, you should really put it on your list.

This is so good. Cameron Kasky is exactly the type of candidate NY-12 needs and the people need across America from Alaska to Florida!
Parkland shooting survivor Cameron Kasky is running for Congress in NY-12, to replace the retiring Jerry Nadler. He came out as queer in 2021 and identifies as a democratic socialist. And he pulls no punches in this campaign launch video.

This reminds me of Chauncey's dream of becoming a bellhop in The House in the Cerulean Sea, which I happen to be reading right now.

I read this a couple of months ago and it holds up really well in 2025, despite (and in some cases because of) everything that's happened since it was published. As always with Kim Stanley Robinson books, it's incredibly thought-provoking and edifying. #booksky

"Citing that climate, Suttell said the Judiciary understands recent calls to expand the use of virtual court hearings in Providence."

Expanding the use of virtual court hearings seems like a really important/valuable solution to the problem of people being kidnapped when they show up to court.
In Rhode Island, ICE arrested an intern who worked for a court, and then a judge intervened to say they had the wrong person.

All leading to a scene where ICE agents surrounded the judge's car and "threatening to smash in the windows if they did not comply." www.wfla.com/news/judge-i...

This is a really good resource. Worth a read, wherever you are.
With ICE and border patrol goons spreading out across the country, I put together a resource guide for buying, printing, and distributing whistles, based on my own experience. Now is the time to whistle up, hope this helps. dansinker.com/posts/202…

I love this, except it's driving the copyeditor part of my brain crazy that they put the word novel *after* the title instead of before it, where it clearly belongs.

I've been really disappointed by the publisher's responses to this. There are reasonable indemnification clauses, and there are boilerplate contracts that don't try to grab every right under the sun. .
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

Absolutely egregious from the people who bought the three oldest magazines in SFF and are attempting to convert them into a giant funnel of monetizable IP
This postscript is so telling of what trying to negotiate with MRM is like. Massive respect for Scott in sticking to his principles and not allowing them to bully or gaslight him into signing. I'm disgusted that this is still happening to authors. No market is worth this.
