35 years ago today, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist and its territory was absorbed into the Federal Republic. If you want to learn more about the rise and fall of the GDR on this auspicious #TagderEinheit, you can check out my new book: www.bloomsbury.com/uk/german-de...

So tasteless that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum sells these (the salesman told me that the Jehovah’s Witness ones are the bestsellers)

Compulsory 'voluntary work' is just unpaid Labour.

Effectively they want to make migrants do community service for the crime of wanting to live in the UK

Flying to Washington tomorrow for the GSA and very excited to hear some very exciting papers about german history/literature/culture/politics

And also maybe fulfil my lifelong dream of a fling with a member of the National Guard! Much gratitude to Trump 4 making Washington a suitable site for this

Why are some granted the dignity of averted eyes and others not spared judgment?

It's often for the same reasons as Butler identified for why some are mourned and others ignored.

But it's important to distinguish the two responses, because they represent two distinct social phenomena.

Interested to read this! Immer wieder struck by the negative side-effects of Opferfixierung in Holocaust memory (not exactly an original observation, but nonetheless)

Here are some things that Charlie Kirk said in his life.

The man is dead, and so it only seems fair to share his legacy by cataloguing the values he spread while alive.

This is what I mean about the minutiae of American fascism infecting British political discourse. We have our own fascism to sort out

Watching this video made this already terrifying story so much worse.

If you click through to the video, you’ll hear a young woman repeatedly telling a college professor that President Trump has declared that what the Professor had been teaching is illegal and she’ll be meeting with the head of the university about it.

It’s chilling and scary.

Every single one is "happy birthday dearest Jeffrey my best friend in all the world. Here's to many beautiful years of pedophiling ahead, that thing which brought us so close together, lots of love [famous person] (signature)"

What a horrifying answer.

-Given that Israel is destroying the conditions for Palestinian life in Gaza
-Given the rampant genocidal discourse in Israel

The UK should live to its responsibility to PREVENT genocide

Whether the court eventually finds a "specific intention" or not is secondary

That's why I keep saying: fascism, the ultimate end of reactionary politics, is not an alternative ideology or set of principles. It is their absence. It's a permission structure, license to slough off the voice of conscience, join a thought-deafening mob, and indulge your basest instincts.

Alles Meldungen aus den letzten Tagen.
Die Verkehrspolitik des Berliner Senats ist ein reiner Fiebertraum.
Collage aus Meldungen des "Tagesspiegel".

1. "Berliner Verkehrsverwaltung kürzt weitere 51 Mio. Euro bei der S-Bahn."
2. "Wegen Dauerstau durch die A100: BVG stellt Busverkehr am Treptower Park auf mehreren Linien ein.
3. "Bondes Traum von der Magnetschwebebahn. Die Berliner würden sich über mehr pünktliche Züge freuen."
4. Update. Weil die Luft wieder besser ist: Auf diesen 22 Straßenabschnitten schafft der Senat Tempo 30 ab."

Vance argued that Americans who trace their ancestry to pre-Civil War have a greater claim to citizenship (slaves’ descendants excluded, natch) and others should be officially second class.

He explains his beliefs a lot. But acknowledging it means admitting they’re extreme and no Dem is equivalent.

For the last couple of years much of the media has had the most incredible unwillingness to learn literally anything about JD Vance. Never seen anything like it. Active resistance to learning anything about his ideas.
