Since so many people are fangirling over Carney's supposed "historic" speech in Davos, I want to offer an alternative reading.

This is not left cynicism, but a sober reading of imperial positioning in this moment.

1) Carney squarely positioned Canada as a middle power.

You have to hand it to the current Irish government - they'll do absolutely whatever it takes to keep the housing crisis going.
The government shamefully votes down a Bill to tackle the dereliction crisis.

It's a national scandal that we have over 50,000 homes sitting vacant for more than six years during a homeless crisis. We need use it or lose it legislation.

Think that Canada’s border agents, the CBSA, are radically different from ICE?

@desmondcole.bsky.social explains how the Canada Border Security Agency works, often in tandem with ICE, to detain and deport migrants, sometimes with lethal consequences.

How do they get away with this stuff? They’re either purposefully misleading, or just blatantly ignorant to the facts. Family reunification accounts for less than 1% of inward migration to Ireland. It just means a traumatised person gets to be with their spouse or child while they restart their life

The UK government signalling they may unblock arms sales to Israel is deeply troubling.

Let’s not be fooled by talk of “ceasefires” or “peace.” Israel’s genocide in Gaza has not stopped. Killings have continued. The illegal blockade remains as does the system of apartheid.

Apartheid Israel has murdered at least 14 people in Gaza today, 5 of them children. It is bombing Gaza right now. At least 425 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in the so-called ceasefire. War crimes committed with total impunity including from our government. #GazaGenocide

The legislation is mad.

All immigration Judicial Review will now be sent to Dublin Circuit Court? But just immigration, nothing else? A duty on Court Presidents to try and reduce the number of cases taken against the Minister whenever he asks them? It's like it's Jim's personal fiefdom.
Legislation which will overhaul the judicial review process has been published by Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan. He pledged that it would result in greater transparency and a more streamlined process

Great letter in today's Irish Times refuting the ridiculous assertion that standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people is unfairly 'singling out' Israel, in fact the apartheid state is singled out by the so-called international community but for total impunity for its crimes. #FreePalestine

I'm sickened that the government voted CETA through at 1am last night. It's an anti-people, pro-corporation deal that allows Canadian investment companies to sue us, the Irish people. So a Canadian company can buy up housing & sue the Irish state if we introduce rent controls. #Speirgorm #Speirgorm

Scandalously at 1am, the government has just pushed through a law with far reaching ramifications.

It allows them to sign up to a parallel court process only accessible by corporations. There they can sue Ireland if we do anything to interfere with their "right" to profit.

As a handful of us have been screaming for a long time now: there is no "ceasefire". The UN security council has approved the further colonisation of Gaza, and Israel is being rewarded for its genocide. It's still the 1700s in the West, we just have phones and cheap dopamine addictions now.
A horrendous report on ABC radio from a Brisbane doctor doing a second tour in Gaza with Medecins sans Frontières. She says the ceasefire is in name only, the genocide continues and the deprivation of basic food, shelter and resources means even the injured haven’t what the need to heal.
