It's sadly that time again; a post of other places I can be found on the internet if you're thinking of leaving the site.

1. My blog, Night Of The hats, which I update most days, is on blogspot because I have never moved it /1

I'm out on another short walk as unofficial town sorcerer. No town anywhere in the world has yet to hire me as official town sorcerer but that's OK. I do what I can with what I have. I've brought my bag of rolled oats, a bag of unsalted peanuts, chapstick, an asthma inhaler, a small ET figurine.

I must admit that the practice illustrated in the attached images both irritates and concerns me. The pictures are the cover and first page of Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars as it first appeared in book form in 1917, and then the cover and first page of the same book as published in 2024.
The striking cover of the first publication (in book form) of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel, A Princess of Mars. The illustrator was Frank E. Schoonover. The first page of the 1917 edition of A Princess of Mars. A highlighted sentence reads: "We all loved him, and our slaves fairly worshipped the ground he trod." Joe Jusko's exciting cover of A Princess of Mars as published in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorize Library line by ERB, Inc. The first page of the 2024 estate-authorized edition of A Princess of Mars. A highlighted sentence reads: "We all loved him, and our servants fairly worshipped the ground he trod."

Back from my family trip to tell you that I have a new story in @kaleidotrope.bsky.social ! "What a Big Heart You Have" is my tender tribute to Grandma and Aunt Ellen, though the characters aren't literally them. kaleidotrope.net/autumn-2025/...

So you might have noticed that I've started posting little threads about my short fiction reading (with the hashtag #quicksipreviews). I'm testing this out bc I'll still be reading a lot of short fiction, but want the freedom to say as much or as little as I want, and to do it without deadlines

A self-repairing relay station seems to have duplicated itself. When you arrive you discover that records show it has actually built 512 new stations, each of which are copying messages to somewhere, after a ship arrived with raw materials and a software update.

the trouble with cyberpunk dystopias is that everyone living in a giant superdense city is a fucking dream compared to what we have. you need cyberpunk suburbia. a million identical houses stretching beyond the horizon.

Science fiction has depended for a long time on three humane limits: you can't really travel faster than light, meaning we can keep making "Star Trek" and "Star Wars in peace, dreaming of FTL without living it; you can't build intelligent robots; you can't do some tech version of Plato's Cave.

I realised a couple of years ago that in my science fiction people come back from the dead all the time it's no problem (there are problems but it's just a thing). In my fantasy, any raising the dead inevitably turns to disaster.

People keep submitting, we keep reading. Submitting, reading, submitting, reading - will it ever end?

(Yes - 15th October, be sure to submit by then as this the last submission period of 2025! We however will keep reading after that until they've all been considered.)

Our readers continue to work through the submissions we've received, and we still want more! Read the submission guidelines for details and a link to the portal. translunartravelerslounge.com/submissions/

For some reason one of the side chapels of the Catedral del Buen Pastor (Cathedral of the Good Shepherd) in San Sebastián is dedicated to this mechanism. I have no idea what it is or was, or why it is so honored.
Some sort of clockwork mechanism. More distant view of the mechanism, showing that it’s in a central location of a cathedral side chapel.

Monster Of The Week 291 is SlightlyTooSmallBag, I thought I could get everything in, when it's empty it fits in a pocket, spends hours every week filling in online surveys and always has a strong opinion.
A square grey bag, bulging oddly, with brightly coloured items sticking out the top, has two spindly legs and an eye near the top, one bulge could almost be a nose or beak
