In the Fourth Republic, we're going to resurrect the Postal Service with postal banking, public email accounts, and neighborhood post offices that provide constituency services and free legal advice. It's going to be so good.

With the clear failure of all the 2A types to rise up in armed defense of the people in the face of a tyrannical regime, I think we can re-evaluate the possibly that there is no good reason to own a weapon with a magazine.

Corrupting economic statistics will change our economic reality. Here's how:

Tariffs raise prices. Social Security is indexed to inflation. If Trump tells a partisan BLS head to downplay inflation, seniors' social security checks won't keep up.

Rigged stats = stolen benefits.

This and Portland’s Clean Energy Fund show it’s possible to strategically tax high earning individuals and corporations…the challenge is moving the funds out quickly enough to drown out anti-tax messaging from “fiscal conservatives” and others invested in individualist narratives.

This. 1,000,000% this.
What if everyone eager to throw money at a "liberal joe rogan" that doesn't exist instead bought one failing local newspaper and hired a handful of real reporters and simply told them to go do journalism and print it.
i wish i had the power or the money to like hire thousands of out of work journalists and put them (us?) to work doing what we do best ie chipping and scraping at the lies people in power tell. horse race commenters not welcome

Just a random guy selling internationally traded goods here. From my perspective we’re just beginning to see cost impacts of tariffs. While many goods have relatively low cost-price ratios, there’s also a whole lot of shit we buy where the cost increases are 100% likely to drive up prices.

Agreed. We should be proud of the US Ship of State, and I can think of a few mutineers we could throw overboard to increase our pride.

Do they really think they can scare us with the word “socialist” when they are literally sending out men in masks with no warrants and no badges to disappear people off American streets?

I know what I’m scared of, and it’s not a socialist.

Leaving a bike on the sidewalk overnight or while at work often results in a missing tire or gearset, but for most of us, it’s only a matter of time until the entire frame disappears.

Fucking right. Now let’s get another 2/3 republican appointed judiciary panel to rule against overstepping on anti-immigrant EOs.

It genuinely sounded like Trump did not understand what his own administration was doing here. In a week where we're talking about Biden's alleged lack of capacity, maybe some pundits could get on this.

I’d like to see some of these career officials refuse to walk out calmly. We need the optics of them being dragged out their office by goons while yelling that the administration is violating the constitution.
This is what its like to work in the Trump administration now. When a career official objected to declaring that living immigrants were dead on legal and ethical grounds, security guards went to his office and told him to leave.

A senior executive who objected was marched out of his office and put on leave, while earlier warnings about the agency’s deaths database were ignored.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

I've been posting since 2016 (when I first joined twitter) that it would be good for American society if more elites went to prison. Not signed mea culpas, not paid fines, prison.
One of the defining feelings in American life, for decades now, is elites doing plainly criminal shit and nothing at all happening as a result. It is deranging in a way that virtually nothing else is. Media fixates on perceived street lawlessness but shit like this matters much more in my opinion.

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

My working theory of the auto pen thing is that Trump is big mad about it because he views signing EOs as his core (sole?) competency as president, therefore auto pen use is a legit dereliction of duty by his predecessor.

This describes our current situation with great clarity:
I think a lot of people I know are traumatized or triggered right now because they understand that we can't count on the grifters and bigots to do the right thing but now it's once again clear that some powerful people who pretend to be allies of what's righteous disappear when we need them most.

If we can "avoid a government shutdown" by voting for this CR, then why is the entire Department of Education closed today? Why is USAID closed? Why are hundreds of billions in grant contracts frozen?

We are already in the shutdown. And your votes DON'T stop it. In fact, they allow it to expand.
