Can we still make sense of reproductive rights & pregnancy discrimination as a gender equality issue if we need to (1) affirm that people of all genders may and do become pregnant and (2) not alienate the many cis and trans women who do not? I argue that yes ofc!! Come find out how (link below)! 1/6
Screenshot of the first page of my article, "Pregnant Persons as a Gender Category: A Trans Feminist Analysis of Pregnancy Discrimination," which just appeared in the Spring 2025 issues of Signs. The start of the introduction reads: "Since 1974, the United States Supreme Court has recognized a constitutionally significant distinction between discrimination against women and discrimination against pregnant persons—for all the wrong reasons, and reaching all the wrong results. Upholding the State of California’s refusal to cover uncomplicated pregnancies under its otherwise comprehensive workers’ short-term disability insurance program, the court held in Geduldig v. Aiello that differential treatment based on pregnancy is not in and of itself a form of sex discrimination within the meaning of American gender equality law. Writing for a 6–3 majority, Justice Potter Stewart explained that this is because pregnancy as a “physical condition” is itself neutral on sex and fails to carve the social world at the gender seam between women and men. “The lack of identity between the excluded disability [i.e., pregnancy] and gender as such under this insurance program becomes clear upon the most cursory analysis,” Justice Stewart claimed. “The program divides potential recipients into two groups—pregnant women and nonpregnant persons. While the first group is exclusively female, the second includes members of both sexes. . . .”

i so love my students here
A page from a satirical newspaper edited by Barnard/Columbia students. The headlines read: “Barnard College to Sell ‘Entry Swipes’ Packages to Enter Campus” and “Columbia to House Overenrolled Freshmen in Tents on Butler Lawns”

Tl;dr: in the United States, with very limited exceptions, you cannot sue the federal government without its consent. It's a vestige of the divine right of kings. And it was adopted by the founders for multiple reasons, but one was so enslaved people couldn't sue the federal govt for their freedom.

For all of the people who want to know about suing the federal government:

Google "sovereign immunity." Then Google "qualified immunity." Then you'll understand why fixing so much of what we see requires defunding the police.

"I spoke to the governor, she was very nice. But I said, 'Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different.' They are literally attacking and there are fires all over the place...

Trump seems to back off Portland military plan: 'Am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening?'
President Trump had said he will send troops to Portland to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, which he said were "under attack."

“If this person complained about the abusive conditions or even when people asked for personal protective gear or equipment when working with dangerous chemicals, the response was always, ‘If you wanna be a man, I'll treat you like a man’, or ‘aren't you strong enough? Aren't you a man.’”

The lesson is not that trans liberation is a matter of linguistic “inclusion,” as even trans philosophers now seem to think. It’s how little you need to have such that the word ‘daughter’ stands out as the greatest gift from cis parents.

Anyway, read @autoanon.bsky.social ’s riveting new novel!!

My fav scene from Reverse Tomboy: Not its insightful analysis of (hetero)sexuality as inseparable from (normative) gender, or the retroactive meaning-making we do for early exp., or even the malleability of embodiment desires. Just a girl over the moon about the smallest thing—being called daughter.
Photo of a page from Reverse Tomboy:

“I just don’t see why a trans woman has to be more feminine than the average woman. It would be a little insulting to cis women wouldn’t it, if all trans women went around done up like Don Draper’s wives.”

“Yes, I suppose so.”

“But you are being careful, right? No more walking at night in empty parks?” her father chimed in.

“Yes Dad, I promise I’m well aware I’m a trans woman.” Naomi said happily enough.

“I think any father would worry about his daughter.” Joy flooded through Naomi, as it did each of the three times she has heard her father refer to her as his daughter. She could think of nothing better from him. Suddenly, the dress felt a little more comfortable.

“Thank you.” It was a simple thing to say, but so is ‘daughter’. Besides, Naomi was grinning.

It took me less than 5 mins to write a comment about how integral international PhD students are to scientific production, and to the US' economic and cultural power.

Please consider also leaving a comment on the devastating rule change for international PhD students:

My new article, "Calling Trauma, Elite Capture, and Hermeneutical Injustice," is out in Phil Quarterly!

It's a deeply personal project, drawing on family history to examine how privileged groups use claims of trauma to control narratives and to suggest a new way to think of epistemic injustice. 🧵

For those justifiably concerned/angry about this, there's a way to make your voices heard. Public notice and comment on this proposed rule goes through Sep 27

I know there's a lot happening today, but this is sneaking in under the radar. This proposed new rule would absolutely crush foreign PhD students, potentially making it impossible for them to enroll with any certainty of their ability to finish www.politico.com/news/2025/08...

Okay, I’ve had enough. I sat on this all day, but I was there yesterday with approximately 500 other people. The fash attacked us, not the police. The single video shows the end of the fash flanking us by breaking through Northumberland and taking Trafalgar Square

Want to be clear that the predictable violence against the police wasn't the only problem with yesterday's march

It's that 100,000 angry racists gathered in London for the biggest racist march in 50 years, and anyone not white had to steer clear

The govt can't see that because they are inadequate.

I am having a hard time reconciling "Charlie Kirk was a fierce advocate of open dialogue and free expression" with "we must identify and persecute everyone who is insufficiently mournful"
After Charlie Kirk's death, teachers and professors nationwide fired or disciplined over social media posts
At least a dozen faculty and staff have faced fallout over insensitive comments online.
