(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

Also, this is a very good point. Reducing barriers to development makes it easier for smaller developers to build, and they're more likely build smaller buildings w/ more affordable units that don't staff 32BJ or use carpenter union labor. bsky.app/profile/ndha...

I kind of get the Carpenters and 32BJ play (more small buildings means competition for big buildings, which are the projects that can afford union carpenters and need building staff). I don't really understand HTC's motivation at first glance.

Not sure on HTC, but the other unions are often negotiated in when the final agreements with the CMs are reached. The end result has been fewer homes and our crippling housing crisis.

At an event with the Asian Wave group, Cuomo says NYC needs to "reevaluate" the Chinatown replacement jail part of the Close Rikers plan, adding that location's "extremely problematic."

He doesn't absolutely wanna rule out that site, tho, and says Rikers must close.

Of interest to maybe just me and @tvmojoe.bsky.social, but Nielsen is now putting out ratings reports that aren’t segregated by daypart (prime, daytime, late nite) or cable/broadcast/live streaming. So you can see Kimmel’s return was No. 17 on all of TV last week. It’s gold for us ratings dorks.
